Glock cleaning question

I have a Glock model 19. I used it today and cleaned it up correctly. I'm new to handguns and my question is on this particular model, should I rub oil on the outside part of the slide?

There's no reason to, unless you get it dusty/dirty, and you want to make it look "black" again. Other than that, read your manual and make sure you don't "overlube", since that will cause more problems than it solves. www.topglock.com has got a good section on maintenance (under technical info)

Its not going to hurt the slide if you do. I use CLP Break Free on my slides and it keeps them looking new. Otherwise its not required. Just a drop of oil on each slide rail and one on the trigger bar in the frame. Itll run for damn near ever!

not required but i wipe down the outsides of all my guns with some g-96, sprayed on a cleaning rag, just to leave a thin coat on it.

It is not absolutely necessary. However, if you use a spray solvent like GunScrubber (as I do), it can leave the slide looking blotchy. I like to put a very small amount of oil on a rag and wipe it down after reassembling.

I have a walther p99, same finish, and I use rem oil, it dries and leaves a coat of teflon. I also use it on the inside of the slide and it does the same thing. Good stuff.

I clean my GLocks pretty well and when I'm done, I just put a couple of small drops on the rails before I put the slide back on and that's it.

The slide is all but impervious to rust, many aftermarket sights, however, are not.

After cleaning, I like to wipe all metal parts with some silicone cloth.
Of course I sleep with my GLOCK under my pillow, so the sheet kind of remove whatever oil I put on

I live near the ocean, often humidity goes to 90%, no rust on all my GLOCKs and HKs.

I don't oil any of my GLOCK slides the finish is extremely durable.

+1 on the use of a silicone impregnated cloth. Works great as a final wipedown at the range, and after cleaning at home. I use it for all my handguns.

I haven't had this problem (yet) with remoil, but apparently it's going to gum right up on you. Thinking about upgrading to militec. Have you ever tried it? Supposedly lasts longer too.

The glock slide is not going to rust.

Oil on the outside will not affect the gun's operation.

Oil it or not, make your own choice.
