I only recently found out that there are conversion barrels available to fit my .40 caliber Glock 22, 2nd generation. Back when I first bought it(early '90's), nothing like this was available, & there were only rumors of .22 cal Glock conversion kits to come. Well, the best available .22 LR conversion kit now costs well over $200 & is fussy about ammo- best to shoot CCI mini mags, which locally cost almost $5/100.

Now I find out that there are drop-in replacement barrels available to shoot 9mm in my .40 caliber, I saw some on sale for just under $100. At less than $4/50, 9mm is a *lot* cheaper to shoot than the cheapest .40 cal I've seen. I'd have the same pistol, sights, & trigger for practice, & recoil would be a lot closer to .40 cal than a .22. Hmm...The cheapskate's perfect solution?

I understand that I'll need to buy a couple of Glock 17 magazines to shoot the 9mm ammo for practice, that's OK. BUT:
* Will these bbls work on my 2nd gen model 22?
* just how reliable are these barrels? I'd re-assemble it as a .40 cal for "home duties", but I'd hate to spend $150 just to have a jam-o-matic for practice.
* Will the extractor on the .40 cal gun work on the 9mm shells?
* Other than the bbl & magazine, do any other parts in the gun need to be swapped?

And: Is it possible to use a longer Glock bbl in a shorter Glock model? For example, can a bbl from a Glock 17 be used in a Glock 19? Glock 22 bbl in Glock 23?

And about triggers: do any of the brands of 3.5 lb trigger connectors have a real advantage over any others? Back when I got my Glock(almost pre-internet!) you pretty well lived with the trigger you had, that also seems to be much different now. I thought for the time being I'd just get the 3.5# connector, plus maybe a NY return spring, & do a little cleanup & polishing.

All help appreciated.

Spend the money and get a real barrel from Irv at Bar-sto Precision machine:

http://www.barsto.com/

I have a conversion barrel for my Sig from Irv Stone and it is very accurate. I feel a little better knowing that my barrel is made out of stainless steel with stringent production guidelines and is properly heat treated AND is also backed by the reputation of one of the premier barrel makers in the U.S.

I feel better spending an extra $100.00 and knowing what I'm getting, than saving a dime on something of Made-in-China questionable quality, could possibly blow up any time, super-cheap aftermarket barrel.

Ditto on Bar Sto. I've had a conversion bbl for my Glock 35 for over two years and is functions flawlessly. The accuracy is far better than my firend's G34. Mine was ordered as a drop-in and it did exactly that. No modification or fitting at all, but it's nice to know that Bar Sto offers that option.

Thanks for the input. Dunno where the comments about Chines bbls came from though. I'm looking at Storm Lake barrels, machined from stainless steel, in Tennessee. On sale at TopGlock.

I've also been told that there's at least a fair chance that my current .40 magazines may work with 9mm ammo. Hmm... it *would* be only for practice. And if I got a .357 SIG bbl also , it would be "3 guns in one!":D
