What is your opinion of the Glock G33 Gen 4 .357 Sig subcompact handgun? My friend has been after a handgun in .357 Sig and I think he has settled on this model. He'll be using it for home defense and concealed carry.

The .357 SIG cartridge depends on velocity to get the job done, since case design and overall length limits it to light bullets. Try and get some reliable data on what actual ballistics are out of a short barrel , you may find this expensive and loud cartridge doesn't do much better than a 9x19 .

357 Sig is going to perform better than 9mm for any given barrel length. Given that, the point of 357 Sig is to go faster to hit harder, which, as noted above, is mitigated by the shorter barrel. If your friend wants a subcompact Glock that's more powerful than 9mm, I'd recommend they consider the 27 in .40 S&W, which doesn't depend so much on velocity for its power.
For what it's worth, I have a G32 and love the way it shoots. I also had a G23, and compared .40 and 357 Sig directly and found their recoil to be pretty similar. Some folks are more sensitive and have a preference for one over the other, but I don't.

I've often thought of buying a 32 and having a grip reduction done to 33 length.

Would make a great all around gun. Especially combined with 32 mags with a sleeve.

My 2 bits ....

I'd suggest your bud check out a Glock gen 04 23 .40S&W. He can shoot either .40 or .357sig with a simple barrel change or he can add a 9x19mm conversion barrel(with 19/17 size 9mm pistol mags).
The larger Glock 23 gen 04 can take white lights(weapon lights) or laser aiming systems too. Smaller Glock 26/27/33 models can't do that.

Glock 22/23 .40 pistols are now in wide use by US law enforcement. The FBI has authorized the Glock line for approx 5 years now with good results.

For the 33 or the larger 23 .40 I'd suggest your friend add night sights(3 dot).
The new TruGlo FTX or Trijicon HD sights are good. Both are robust and well engineered.
