Glock mags?

How can you tell if high capacity Glock mags are pre-ban or not? Any special markings on them?

The mags marked "For LE / GOVT Use Only" were manufactured during the AWB. Mags manufactured before or after are not marked as such.

You'll also notice that the rear cut of the feed lips is circular, as opposed to square/rectangular cut. May have been some square cuts before 94 though.

There are 8 generations of Glock magazines.

Generations # 1-4 are pre-ban.
Generations #5-6 are during the ban.
Generations #7-8 are post-ban.

Generation #8 (not pictured) is similar in appearance to Generation #7, except is has the ambi-mag release cut out in the front of the magazine.

How Can You Tell 'Drop Free'?

Dear Quiet, thanks for detailed post. Can you tell us how to distinguish 'drop free' from 'non-drop free'? I seem to recall that earlier magazines were non-drop free but do you know the cutoff date? Thanks.

My rule of thumb is round notch in back of mag = non-drop free, but that could only apply to my G19 mags.

distra's rule of thumb is correct.
The u-notched were designed to not drop free.
The square-notched were made to be "drop free".

not to thread jack, but with the ban expired now, why are pre-ban magazines still so desireable? Is it simply for some sort of collector value? My post-ban high capacity magazines function 100%, am I missing out on something though?

I suspect it has to do with some states which have restrictive legislation similar to the AWB, but I haven't made a study of it.

I think its because hi-caps are still illegal in some areas like CA unless they are pre-ban.


But to the cops ive talked to in CA, you still need to prove to them that you legally purchased the mag before the ban or they are going to take the mag anyways.

Pre-ban mags are desireable in NY/NJ.
The ban there indicates you need to prove the mags were made before the 1994 ban. The authorities in NY/NJ go off when the magazine body was made to determine the mags pre-ban status.


Pre-ban mags are not so desireable in CA.
Since, the burden of proof is on the state to prove you did not own the mags in CA before 01-01-2000.
CA DOJ has also stated you can aquire large capacity magazine repair parts to repair/replace any worn/defective part (including the mag body) of your legally owned large capacity magazines.

Any generation Glock pistol can use any generation Glock magazine.

With one exception...
The 3rd generation Glock pistols with the ambi-mag release will only be compatible with the 8th generation Glock magazines and will not be able to use any of the older generation magazines (unless you mod them).
