Glock question

Green Polymer:

* I picked up a fresh OD Gen3 G17 frame from the molding machine. It was wet, and quite cool to the touch. There is no serial number on the plate, but there is a laser code inside the beavertail area that uniquely ID's the frame for internal control and inventory.

* The OD polymer is not as quite strong/durable/UV-resistant as black, they recommend black to customers … the same applies to other manufacturers who use other colors of polymer (like FDE).

* Not many are sold, and this color was introduced due to a U.S. Army requirement.

* If you want a Gen4 or RTF2 Glock in OD, you need to order 20k units (ha, ha).

I would like some quantification for the less durable / UV resistant claim.

OD can withstand how many less hours of sunlight exposure?

If they are talking about durability in terms of number of rounds fired, then how many?

At least a comparison or % between black and OD.

For example, if a police officer carried a Glock for 10 hours a day (exposed to the sun, maybe he works in sunny FL and gets overtime) that's 50 hours a week. Assuming he gets 2 weeks a year off that's 2,500 hours a year. He carries the same pistol for 20 years for a total of 50,000 hours and it's still serviceable. Can the OD owner in the same situation expect 20% less before UV damage causes the pistol a problem? We need a number. If the OD frame was 20% (since we don't know I'll throw out 20% less UV resistant) then the OD owner could expect 40,000 hours (16 years under the same conditions) of trouble free UV exposure.

Assuming / applying the same 20% less to durability: everyone knows a Glock 9mm can last 100,000+ rounds. Does that mean a OD frame will only last 80,000+? Again, we need a number or %

For an employee at Glock to make this comment there must (should) be some data / testing to support the claim.

Way to not answer the question guys :p

I've never seen one, but I'm sure you could order one from Glock. If they won't make one out of the factory, then just buy an OD green 17 and change the barrel/slide out for a comp barrel/slide. Then you could probably sell off your factory barrel/slide

I have never seen one. You could buy a G17C and then send it to a smith or custom shop to have it coated in whatever color you want. I think that would be the cheapest route. A complete aftermarket top end for a Glock is getting pretty close to the cost of a new Glock. You could also send a standard G17 to a custom shop and they could coat and port it in any manner you prefer, but that can get into the $$$.

so a different color dye ruins the integrity of the frame. sounds like bs to me but i'm not a plastics guy.:neener:

That's what warranties are for.

If you have an issue with your OD frame, just call Glock and I'm sure that they will make things right.

You're never going to have a problem with your OD Glock. Your Great grandchildren's children might if they like to go tanning with it. I just posted that for general information.

Breaking news.

Our sales rep sent us this email about Glock changes in production. I check a couple of pages back and didn't see anything on it. Anyone else have more information ?

IMPORTANT INFORMATION!!!

1. OD Guns will no longer be a part of the production line

2. RTF 2 guns will only be available for law Enforcement purchases once GLOCK, Inc. inventory is depleted.

3. Commercial pistols will only be available with fixed sights except the 34/35 which will be shipped with ADJ sights only

I did a search on GunBroker of completed auctions and no 17c in OD was found.

Glock may or may not have ever made a 17c OD, but the fact that zero turn up on a search of completed auctions on GB reveals none ever listed makes it not likely.

As far as Glock discontinuing the OD models....
My 19 OD is going to have a OD 23 to hang out with soon .
I think the OD looks neat, maybe just because it's different.
The suggestion that Glock might cease to produce them was enough for me to speed acquisition of another OD Glock.
If they keep making the OD Glocks, so what; it only sped up what would have happened anyway. ;)
I got another 1st class pistol regardless.
