My predicament. I have for a very long time, wanted to try .40SW in a 1911 format. Found a dealer willing to trade my used Glock 35 and 4 mags for his new RIA #51719 ROCK ULTRA. plus 100 cash OTD. (Trade value discrepancy - tax)

Pro's.... for 1911
No other grip feels as "Right" to my hand / No other trigger feels as "right" to my trigger pulls. (Large part due to familiarity and mental side of things) Never had an issue with RIA in 45 ACP or 9mm, so I trust them. the Glock 35 grip is a bit thick / wide (mental I know). 1911 Novak / Heinie Sights work better for me (mental side)

Cons.... for trading for the 1911
Loss of capacity 8-10 rnds vs. 15+1 or more with hi cap. / Loss of velocity due to the .31 inch shorter barrel / cheaper available mags. I can easily mount a RDS mount on the glock which I like even better than 1911 sight picture with trad. sight sets.

I see the Glock right now as having (the rock solid - sure thing) at the moment. The 1911 as fulfilling a fun range gun that I want. Which is why I'm having difficulty deciding. I can always use the "screw it" you're going to die soon anyway" argument. But not sure if i'm not seeing or picking up on something I've overlooked in honestly comparing them: that would make this a stupid move.

P.S. also forgot to mention this is for a range / recreational end user perspective.

If you're going to get a 1911 in a caliber between 9mm and .45, then make it a 10mm. You can always buy Federal 10mm ammo that is loaded so weak it may as well be .40 or .40+p.

I say pass, if you dont want the G35 anymore wait for something better to come along in a trade.

Is this the RIA in question? https://www.armscor.com/firearms-list/rock-ultra-fs-40sw-8rd

Make sure you can source 1911 mags in .40 S&W. The .40 S&W is not common in the 1911, and while there are some double stack 1911/2011's in .40 S&W, they are relatively rare in single stack 1911's. The fact that .40 S&W has fallen off the cliff as far as popularity goes, 1911 mags in .40 S&W may not be easy to find.

In addition, there are an awful lot of 1911 mag makers, and not all of them are good. Most, even the not so good ones have figured out how to produce a pretty decent .45 Auto mag, and the good makers have finally pretty much figured out how to make an OK 9mm mag, but the jury is out if anybody makes a good single stack mag in .40 S&W.

Thanks for your inputs, TJQ (yes, that's the one), TTv2, and Sparkyv.

Thank you TJQ's concern over the magazine being problematic and available. I have an email off to RIA / Armscor asking about the production longevity of .40SW mags in the single stack. Tripps Research: (Cobra mags) got back to me. They said they have no intentions, at this time of stopping production of .40SW single stack mags. Wilson Combat replied that they will continue to make runs of their 40SW mags for the foreseeable future. And will always make special runs at various future dates if need be. Confidence is high on being able to get 6-10 mags over the next year.

Do you guys think the 100 bucks over trade is out of line / too much?

I would sell the Glock and get what I really wanted . If that Rock Island is what you really want then make the deal .

I just checked on buds and they list the RI for $555 , so that is pretty close to the deal that your local dealer is offering you by the time you pay a FFL .

If you shoot the 1911 platform better get a 1911.
The $100 over trade seems negotiable. Personally I'd try to get that down to at least $75 or have the lgs include a second mag with the 1911. The lgs will be getting an easier to sell glock with an extra mag.

If this is something you're going to be trusting your life to, stick with the Glock.

If it's a range toy and you just want to try out the 1911, go for it.

If you're looking for that just right grip and lighter trigger pull to make you a better shooter, you're gonna be disappointed.

Thanks Tony. Nope this would strictly be another range / recreational option. My DA/SA revolvers and other semi-auto's carry defense duty. My familiarity with 1911's and working on them goes way back. Lucky in that I have had the brownells 1911 trigger, hammer and sear tool kit for some years now. A touch up or correction is an easy option if need be. Used to running pull weights a smidge over 4 lbs on my 1911's

I picked Glock in your poll, but after reading your posts I think you should go with your heart.
Thanks Pat, I did. Just got back from the store. The rock should be home by Friday morning. They gave me 50 bucks more value when I added the RDS mount I no longer needed. My end ended up being 50 bucks and tax. They treated me very well, I think. The husband and gun guy of the shop owner seemed very interested themselves.

“Rat”?
Glad you got your new pistol. Let us know how she shoots.

My 40 caliber RIA is a special edition double stack of some kind. I had to send it back to the factory two or three times. On the final time I asked for a different gun, but the manager said he would have a senior employee look at it, because it was a special model and couldn't be replaced. It was finally returned to me in working condition, but the chamber is a bit tight for reloads.

I'd forgotten about all of that. On the other hand, it's a great shooter. Great sights, great trigger, fits my huge hands well, accurate as all get out. Not impressed with the finish. It and my Sig 229 are my two favorite 40 caliber pistols to shoot, out of many.

If the grip on the Glock is a problem, Google "glock hump fix". It's a jig that helps you to chop the hump out of the grip. I did it to my G19 and it made a nice difference for me. It feels kinda like a 2011.

On the other hand, I'm a big fan of RIA 1911's. From what I've seen, trigger quality is hit and miss, but the machine work is clean and the fitting of the parts is pretty dang good. I just wouldn't call it 100% until I put 1k rounds through it without a hiccup. If you like to tinker, this would be for you. I just don't know that I'd dump a G35 to get it. I'd find a way to have both.

Thanks, TallBall, have the inverse problem, baby hands. Be Well and regards

I really like the feel of 40 caliber out of a 1911 or medium-framed revolver.

A little spicier than 45acp. Makes me smile. :)
