There was a time when I actually considered donating to GOA - not any more. They're taking credit for the Heller decision. :cuss: OR at least giving themselves more credit for influence than I believe they actually have.

Yesterday was a historic day for the gun rights movement.

For starters, Gun Owners of America is pleased that the U.S. Supreme Court, in the DC v. Heller opinion, struck down the handgun ban and trigger lock requirement in the nation's capital.

As a result, GOA experts have spent the last two days using radio, TV and
print media to explain the Court's decision and its impact upon the future
of the gun debate in America.

GOA's amicus brief urged the Court not to use the Heller case as a
springboard to resolve the constitutionality of all of the nation's firearms laws. In fact, the GOA brief was the only one making the request not to
rule on automatic weapons and other issues, upholding judicial restraint.

GOA is pleased that the judges heeded our admonition to limit the Court's
holding to the case before it.

In so doing, the Court's decision -- in dissenting Justice Breyers words --
"threatens to throw into doubt the constitutionality of gun laws throughout
the United States."

Notable gun banner, Dianne Feinstein, was equally upset, saying she was
"profoundly disappointed" in the Court decision.

The U.S. Supreme Court also followed GOA's urging and refused to do any balancing of governmental powers and individual liberties -- it just ruled the ban was prohibited by the text of the Second Amendment, saying that its language elevates, above all other interests, the "right of law-abiding, responsible citizens to use arms in defense of hearth and home."

I've seen arrogance in my time but this is just too much.

I wouldn't worry about it.
Let everyone bask in the glory of this victory.
This is our Gettysburg.Close ,but close enough.

hahah, I was ticked at the NRA for doing it, and now I'm ticked at the GOA too. Isn't this the kind of thing which the GOA would normally use as a springboard to crap all over the NRA?

The motion I'm making with my right hand is not appropriate for the forum.

NOW THEREFORE, In the interest of brotherly love, peace, friendship, self-promotion, political grandstanding, and all that, I TALIV, Prince and Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St Adrian of Nicomedia, Patron saint of Arms Dealers, of Cookeville, of Algood and of Baxter, Most Humble Guardian of the Poor of Jesus Christ, Do hereby Proclaim:

I agree with mach4. kudos to GOA. unwad your panties

What's arrogant about it? GOA filed the amicus brief and the ruling was in line with their urging. Pretty cut and dried, if you ask me.

Well...
I did ask... ;)

Below I quote the statement that broke the camel's back for me. It clearly indicates that GOA believes they were responsible, if taken at face value, for the ruling or had great influence on the decision. The word heeded implies, to me at least, that without GOA'a amicus brief the supremes may very well have ruled differently.

GOA is pleased that the judges heeded our admonition to limit the Court's holding to the case before it.

I get GOA emails all the time and they quite often claim influence and results that really aren't theirs to claim. This time though it just bugged the hell out of me. Kind'a like Monty taking credit for winning the Battle of the Bulge. Yeah he was there, his guys held the northern flank, but we'd have won it without him anyway.

Well, the NRA can't take credit as they wouldn't even touch the case until it looked like Mr. Heller might win. I have no problem with the GOA taking mucho credit for a part of the decision. They at least will go out on a limb for gun owners without checking to see which way the political wind blows.

I wasn't bothered by the comments of GOA. At least they didn't hang us out to dry on the 10 round magazine issue and they didn't compromise on the Lautenburg fiasco. No matter who did what for the pending issue, GOA did a good job of representing the "little guy" gun owners like most of us are.

As I've posted before on these; Who cares if the GOA, NRA, SAF or any other groups take credit for Heller, The Internet or Chocolate Cake.

If it raises funds to pay for the MANY lawsuits coming over the next few years then let them have at it.

The door just flew open. If we seize the moment we can prop the door open forever.

That's a bit hyperbolic, but GOA is known to be.

GOA's pretty aggressive in their efforts on behalf of RKBA. Right now I'm happy to help any organization that wants to use good tactics in attacking the gun prohibitions in this country.

Well, the GOA can take more credit than most of US can. If I had filed a brief or was a powerful politician that took the time and put my name and career on the dotted line, I would want some credit too.

Think about it: In YOUR job, if you endorse a really good idea that could make you look foolish if it doesn't turn out good, YOU certainly would want some credit and bask in the glory when it turns out good.

I'm glad the GOA submitted their brief. Maybe, just maybe, it was the edge in our favor.

When they wrote:

I didn't read it as claiming it as theirs and theirs alone. I felt that they were referring to "our" victory as belonging to all of us who supported 2A. It's our victory. Mine, yours...and ours.

I love it! Know where it came from?

Oh, I'm sure a lot of people claim it.

In fact, the GOA brief was the only one making the request not to rule on automatic weapons and other issues, upholding judicial restraint.
My BS meter went wild on that one.

I find it highly unlikely that the other bazillion briefs all asked for rulings on automatic weapons.

mine did too

Frankly my dear, I dont give a hoot! Let anyone who wants to take credit for it, go ahead and do so, nobody will remember by this time next week..

The important thing is, it happened, and now it is time for us all to forget this type of petty squabbling and PULL TOGATHER to exploit the victory and push it for all it's worth. Thing maybe we can do that?

It's not that the other briefs asked them to rule on automatic weapons, it's that they didn't request that they not make the ruling.

Instead of jumping on GOA and the others, let's thank them for fighting on our behalf. This is only the beginning on many more battles that will take place over the next few years, especially if the White House is occupied by Barack Hussein Obama.

Maybe they were the only ones to specifically ask for there not to be rulings on machine gun bans, etc.

They certainly aren't claiming to be responsible for Heller in my mind.

Dumping on GOA isn't at all productive.

I'd be more on the GOA's side if they weren't so anti-NRA. It doesn't help their efforts to win me as a loyal member when they keep denigrating the other main Pro-Gun organization. Remember, if you can't say anything nice . . .
