"he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one." Luke 22:36.

Hahaha, you better believe I sent an email to them!

Something along the lines of "you are dumb"

Preacherman

I don't suppose Preacherman is available for comment?

I'd comment for myself, but I'm just a brainwashed gun-loving drone.

If I were a churchgoing fella, I might have heard someone say things like:
Make sure as many staff as possible are trained in martial arts and the use of firearms.

Never let an attack go unanswered.

Keep your mind sharp; it is your best weapon.

While we work toward individual ability, remember that even organized mediocrity will overwhelm the most able individual; therefore we must organize and work together if we are to prevail.
I might further have been admonished on the importance of individual responsibility, the application of ethics in daily life, and the dangers of socialism and its associated "sciences."

There are other pertinent things I might have heard if I were a churchgoing kind of guy.

I might have been encouraged to become as literate as I could, to understand as much as possible, and to think for myself.

If I were a churchgoing kind of guy.

I should start an atheist RKBA org called Guns not God, just to piss them off...

Of course I don't think anyone but the Bradys would get it, and it would just alienate gun nuts.

So much to say, where to start?

During this week that is considered holy to many religions,

No, just two, for different (but related) reasons. It's called Easter. It's called Passover. And they don't always coincide, for reasons that go back to I think the 4th century. Nobody else as far as I know, cares about this week. Why's it so hard to say "Christians and Jews"?

Rev. Rachel Smith

Bit of a red flag right there.

Gods not guns partners -- nobody there I have any direct association with and noone who gets any of my money, thankfully. No surprises, the usual list of suspects.

Looks like a sad attempt to tap the Evangelical/Christian population.

Looking at the list of partners, I don't think so. It's your usual list of leftist liberal churches ("liberal" in this context means something different than it does in a political context).

One of the listed partners, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is evangelical in name only, for historical reasons.

This topic is at high risk for moderator disapproval. APS ho!

I don't suppose Preacherman is available for comment?

Lots of different Christian traditions besides the mushy old line liberals. For instance, this comment:

But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. (1 Timothy 5:8, ESV)

In the same way that God requires me to work to provide bread for my family He also requires that I provide for their protection. To do less would make me worse than an unbeliever.

sounds very like something that might come from a Calvinist pen.

This is the truly frightening statement:

We must hold a higher value saying that our children's lives are a sacred trust and that human life is more important than the so-called right to bear arms.

In other words, the fallacy that gun ownership necessarily begets gun violence. That, by insisting on my right to keep and bear arms, I am somehow contributing to "the culture of violence and death."

Ridiculous. I own several guns, and have amassed over 200 hours in formal, defensive firearms training. I have also never laid a hand on another person in my life (brother and sister when we were kids, appropriately excluded - they deserved it :p ). My gun ownership and subsequent training have been undertaken to PRESERVE life, if, God forbid, the necessity warrants.

Strange associations here . . .

. . . I looked at their website, and one of the associated groups is the American Humanist Association (which, last time I looked, specifically disavows a belief in God). How do they square up with the "God" part of "God not guns"???

Here's my contribution to this thread.

Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life
End over end neither left nor to right
Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights
Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life.

Sorry, I had to get Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition out of my head. It's been running for hours, but it seems like days.

John

"he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one." Luke 22:36.

Beat me to the punch on that one, but in addition to that I would like to point out that based on God's directives the children of Isreal fought both defensive and offensively against those countries around themselves. Even to the point of killing women, children, and even all of the animals. This idea that Christians are supposed to be pansies and pacifists does not come from the Bible. Turn the other cheek wasn't meant to keep us from defending our selves. :banghead: It was meant to tell us to be big enough to ignore the every day sleights that we rec. from those around us. It is a far cry from that to what these folks believe. These people do the same with the Bible that the media does with any other story. They pick and choose what parts they want and then completely ignore the context.

Why don't they just call it "Genocide not resistance", since that's INVARIABLY where such inane drivel ends up.

Reminds me of the [supposedly] Jewish guy in usenet who decried the idea of the Jews of Europe arming themselves to oppose the Nazis, and who excoriated them for not fleeing to places which wouldn't have them in the first place, the United States in particular.

Any good Christian who thinks for about a nanosecond should know this is a horrible tactic from the Democrats who hate religion to weasel money out of them thru scare tactics and hitting a nerve. It is incredible people still don;t get the FACT that guns aren't the problem!

The nation which allows them to speak foolishness and practice whatever religion they choose was formed by people with guns and defended by people with guns.

Very scary....

As a pastor of a small non-denominational Christian church, just last night I was teaching in bible study from John Chapter 18 which included verse 10,
Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.) John 18:10 (NIV)

We also crossed referenced Luke 22:36
He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. Luke 22:36 (NIV) He commanded this so that they might protect themselves.

Jesus was never a pacifist, although He came to sacrifice His life for our sins.
He is the Lamb that takes away the sins of the world. He is my soon coming King also known as the Lion of the Tribe of Judah.

God's Word is Truth as God is Truth.
The truth is many times inconvenient for us.
We also referenced the following, from Dake's Study Notes which may help you also maintain moderation in your own Bible studies.

Self-ignorance is so often manifest in connection with religion. The only remedy is crucifixion and study (Gal. 2:20; 2Tim. 2:15; 3:17). The zealous must always be self-controlled and act in knowledge or the work they seek to help will be destroyed (Rom. 10:1-4; Jn. 16:2). The disciples did not yet understand the true mission of Jesus (Lk. 9:44-45). Christianity is not to be propagated by the sword. —Dake's Study Notes
So although we are to defend ourselves we are not to win converts by the sword. Don't criticize God for the inane acts of people whom incorrectly use The Scriptures out of context to drive their own personal agenda's. The Brady Bunch is a tool of the Devil, let's make sure we aren't also.

cited verses are below for your convenience.

Galatians 2:20 (NIV) I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

2 Timothy 2:15 (NIV) Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

2 Timothy 3:17 (NIV) so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Romans 10:1-4 (NIV)
1 Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved.
2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge.
3 Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness.
4 Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

John 16:2 (NIV) They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.

Luke 9:44-45 (NIV)44 "Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men." 45 But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
