Going to college, what to do with guns?

They insured the contents as well to a certain dollar point. That storage place got pretty busy right before opening morning of deer season
It is worth reading the fine print. Storage unit companies may or may not insure certain high-value (or otherwise specialized) items, and may not want/allow/insure guns stored in their facilities. May not be a problem, or may be. Check.

Yeah, some storage units specifically don't allow guns. Definitely check first.

Since access to your guns on short notice is important to you, off campus storage is the only answer. You should explore the options offered here. There might be a sympathetic faculty member available at some point. One of my friend's professors became a great friend and he would have gladly stored the guns. I had the same problem and didn't have easy access to my guns for one semester and summer session when I lived in the dorm. But frankly, I was too busy to hunt so I didn't. I eventually lived off campus and started to hunt and shoot again. But being poor as a church mouse, I shot very little all the way through. Just couldn't afford it.

Get online and call your local gun shops over the years I had several who offered monthly storage.

I'm going to suggest that goon is right about this one. An FFL dealer cannot take your gun(s) into their holding without putting them into their bound book. They cannot release them again without transferring them back to you and that must be on the 4473 form. That would be quite a hassle (and most likely would involve a NICS call every time as you probably don't hold a carry permit that bypasses that step).

Further, depending on whether you live in the same state where you're attending college, that could be a big problem if you own and want to store handguns, as you could transfer them to the shop, but the shop couldn't (by federal law) transfer them back to you.

Yeah I gotta pistol, a hi point carbine and a Remington 870...no bank boxes for me. And the ffl storage is sounding less and less appealing, thanks for the heads up!

I've often wondered why 24/7 self-storage places don't offer small lock boxes and lockers in addition to rooms. The profit potential per square foot of space is probably 10X greater. Seems like an untapped market to me.
