GONZALES WANTS ARBITRARY POWER TO BLOCK GUN PURCHASES; SAF SAYS HE SHOULD RESIGN
BELLEVUE, WA – Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’ troubling support of legislation that would allow him and future attorneys general the arbitrary power to block firearms purchases without due process is cause for him to step down as the nation’s highest ranking law enforcement officer, the Second Amendment Foundation said today.

The bill, S. 1237, was introduced last week at the Justice Department’s request by Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), one of the most extreme anti-gunners in Congress. Called the “Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act of 2007,” this legislation would give the Attorney General discretionary authority to deny the purchase of a firearm or the issuance of a firearm license or permit because of some vague suspicion that an American citizen may be up to no good.

“This bill,” said SAF founder Alan Gottlieb, “raises serious concerns about how someone becomes a ‘suspected terrorist.’ Nobody has explained how one gets their name on such a list, and worse, nobody knows how to get one’s name off such a list.

“The process by which someone may appeal the Attorney General’s arbitrary denial seems weak at best,” Gottlieb suggested, “and there is a greater concern. When did we decide as a nation that it is a good idea to give a cabinet member the power to deny someone’s constitutional right simply on suspicion, without a trial or anything approaching due process?

“We’re not surprised that General Gonzales has found an agreeable sponsor in Frank Lautenberg,” Gottlieb observed. “The senator from New Jersey has never seen a restrictive gun control scheme he did not immediately embrace, and S. 1237 is loaded with red flags. It would allow an appointed bureaucrat the authority to suspend or cancel someone’s Second Amendment right without even being charged with a crime.

“Attorney General Gonzales has no business asking for that kind of power over any tenet in the Bill of Rights,” Gottlieb said. “He took an oath to uphold the Constitution, not trample it. Perhaps it is time for him to go.”

Wow the "gonzales should resign" meme is quickly reaching perfect storm proportions. Pissing off a major conservative constituency is potentially very damaging to the republican party. I hope he gets flushed down the same politician disposal hole as Harriet Miers.

It is rare that someone of such political ineptitude can rise to such heights of power. First the ill considered delegation of firing authority and now this stupidity? The man is a liability.

Well Boys and Girls, this should be a lesson to those that allow themselves to believe that there is such a thing as a good people-control law. Gonzales acted in haste because of his own skin and thereby let the cat-out-of-the-bag two three years early (thank GoD for selfish politicians). This is the true direction of a government that is detached from the people, and Republican or Democrat, there is no difference.

Gonzalez wants, and has argued for, arbitrary power period. He should be dismissed in disgrace, and have it go down on his permanent record.

I agree with all of the responses above. Gonzales is an example of a big government, little peasant neo-con at his best.

Primary reason why I don't like Bush is because of the guys he surrounds himself with.

You guys have got it all wrong.

You see we have this terrorist problem, and if they can buy guns at any gun shop they might be able to kill a whole lot of people. Fortunately they have to buy their guns at a gun shop, because it is impossible for them to get guns anywhere else. We have laws you know...

But that won't happen because the Justice Department and the Attorney General have this list with the names of all the bad guys. :scrutiny:

So they can use this list by flagging the database to that the terrorist/bad guys will be turned down when the dealer makes a background check.

And for extra safety the Attorney General can add names of anyone who just might be a terrorist.

And of course when they are turned down the terrorist/bad guys will give up, turn around, and become good guys. After that everyone will live happily ever after.

Now I feel better, and warm and fuzzy all over… :D

Don’t you too?? :) :) :)

As me late Mudder use to say, some people don’t have enough brains to keep their ears apart. ;)

Gonzales should resign. In lieu of that, he should be fired. So far, there is no indication that either will happen. I think there are grounds for impeachment... not that it'll ever happen.

:cuss: spineless congresscritters...

F--- Kaizen and the rest of the Japanese corporate culture some people have tried to bring to the US.

We need to adopt the Japanese practice of hara-kiri for disgraced people in positions of responsibility. THAT would be worth importing. Perhaps we should start a Management Consulting firm.

Gonzalez' one accomplishment? When he became 2005's most notable diversity hire, it made us really like Ashcroft, in ways we'd never before considered!:p

so much for him trying to lay low during this time of scrutiny and controversy.

He needs to step down. This is getting ridiculous.

Gonzales must go

The beginning of the end of our republic if we turn over the second amendment to the attorney general. I have loyally supported Pres. Bush, debated in support of the Patriot Act. But, this is is it, I am done with these anti-freedom disgraces to liberty.

Ugh... and I thought Ashcroft was a moron for wanting the boobies on those Statues of Lady Justice covered.

At least John has his head wired right on RKBA. This Alberto guy is just a bad joke.

Fire him. And I agree with an already expressed sentiment of doing so ballistically.

So they want the arbitrary power to suspend the Second Amendment? That is a surprise? They've done it to every other provision of the Bill of Rights.

The precedents these great "conservatives" have created very well may be handed over to a Hillary or Obama (or a McCain or Guiliani)--be very afraid.

And don't forget he wanted to go after "perverts" who like online adult oriented porn, or write weird stories about animals (gross to me, but hey, not illegal) in lieu of chasing terrorists.

Where did this piece of work come from?

Its been a long time since an entire Presidential administration has flopped as grandly as Team Bush.

Not really...Clinton's administration dropped the ball too.

This won't go anywhere...Gonnzales is in enough trouble after firing those lawyers.
However, it is time for him to go...if he won't resign, Bush needs to fire him. I sure would like to know why a Republican AG went to a Democrat to introduce a bill. That's enough to fire him right there.

Gonzales needs to be fired, tried for treason, and parked in a federal penitentiary.

Works for me. And while we're at it... about 3/4 of Congress, and the rest of the Executive branch, should join him for 20 to life. :fire:

Ashcroft was a lunatic, and dangerous too, but Gonzales was never intedned to be a serious AG, IMHO. His job is to be a ridiculous fall guy and distract from the guy that hired him.

Heckuva job, Alberto!
