I have owned upwards of 20 1911s in the last 25 years, and just recently breached the $1000 barrier (just barely) to buy a used Les Baer.
If you are willing to buy used, there are tons of great 1911s for very reasonable prices. I have only bought two brand new, and none recently. For example, I have bought eight used Kimbers so far and have never paid more than $850. Never found a bad one yet, so I'm still buying them.
If he is active duty or retired military, he can buy any brand new S&W, including a nice variety of 1911s for 60% of MSRP, which will put him in a very nice, brandy-new 1911 for ~ $800.
