Looking to start a project on a Savage 99. It's old and shows wear on the metal and furniture.

Collectors value is greatly diminshed. It's D&T, stock has some cracks and etc. I've researched it, it's definitely not a collector, but a shooter.

So...anyone know a good smith that can refinish and not cost me an arm & leg ?

I might also be looking for new furniture or someone that can revitalize the furniture.

If any of ya'll did something similar, I'd love to see pic's to get my juices flowing!

2Dswamp: You need to contact Matt Almeda at revolverarmorer.com. He's in suffolk, and will Duracoat for you. GREAT guy, too.

I understand that its a shooter, but don't coat it. That belongs on guns with no tradition. Get it to a decent gunsmith and have him polish and blue it. Give the gun some dignity and put it back into proper shape.
I'm sorry I don't have the name of a good gunsmith in your area, but even if you have to take it to a Gander Mtn. store and have them ship it out to be P&Bed, thats better than duracoating a Savage 99.

My point was that MAtt does Blue, park, duracoat, whatever. He's a very gifted guy, and has the facility to do any finish you want.

A Savage Model 99 deserves no less than high polish bluing. I did one in the early '80s and it turned out beautifully. Also did the wood and recut the checkering which was easy-only 18 lpi. Have the brass rotary ammo lifter polished with jewelers' rouge for a contrast to the blue.

I agree with Bear and jimmy. In fact, a fellow engraver has one that I'm going to rust blue once he's done scratching on it. The classics should always have a good bluing job.

Phil at Glenrock blue does excellent work for a good price. He does some factory bluing too. Very professional and not overpolished like so many reblues.

I'll second Matt Almeada of Revolver Armorer.... As long as he is ammicable to fixing your rifle.

He has done a custom Smith and Wesson M15 and repaired my Colt Cobra for me in the recent past. Great guy that does top notch work.

My carry model 10 is going to Matt this weekend, as is my 629.
He built a 3" 686+ that was perfect in every way. My wife stole it from me.

Steveracer...I think I have Matt's business card. I believe he attends alot of the local gun shows.

I appreciate the advice from everyone and tend to agree that the traditional rifles such as the 99's do need to be treated with some reverance and will stick with blueing.

I think I'll take a road trip out to Suffolk and discuss my options with Matt.

And thanks to Jimmyray for the polishing advice on the brass cartridge counter.

Appreciate all the info!

BR,
Tim

There's a member on here, BigAlAZ that does bluing. He did a high gloss bluing on a custom rifle for me that was the blue bluing job I've seen done outside of the factory. The best part, $80! I'm pretty much a perfectionist and I keep telling everyone I can about him. Look him up on here and see if he's interested in doing the work for you. I promise you won't be disappointed.
