My father-in-law just picked up an XD45. He said it holds 13+1, so I believe it is the full-size model. He is interested in a holster for CCW. Any recommendations on what has worked well for you with your XD45?

My father-in-law is about 5'7", and probably weighs about 180. I'm not sure how he'll carry (e.g. IWB, OWB, etc), so please recommend what has worked. He did mention that he is interested in a retention holder (you have to press a button to release the gun).

Please give any and all recommendations. Thanks.

Inside & Outside

I use two holsters for my XD-45 Service (4").
First, this is big, heavy (13 rounds of .45 ACP is HEAVY) pistol that is grip heavy.
For outside the waist, belt-carry I use a High Noon Slide Guard. This is a high ride type, best worn at 4:00 - 4:30 under a loose Hawaian or Florida fishin' shirt.
For inside the waist, I use a Don Hume. Don't remember the model, but it's an open top (no retaining strap) and attches with two rather narrow, but serviceable, snap belt-loops. An XD-45 disappears under a loose T-shirt with this rig.
The most essential thing for concealing this pistol is a good gunbelt. I use an Akers 1-1/2" with a plastic reenforcement -- good quality and has held up well after about 16 months of daily wear.

.45 ACP vs. 9mm = Why waltz when you can rock & roll?

I have an XD-40, which is a little smaller, but I use a Crossbreed Supertuck with it and it's very comfortable and conceals well. I still need to order one for my 1911, I just haven't gotten around to it. The wait is a little long, but they're great holsters at a good price.

I have both a Crossbreed SuperTuck and a FIST Basic #12 on order for my XD-40. I'll let you guys know what I think when they arrive.

I've been carrying my XD45 Service, IWB, in a Brommeland Max Con V for almost a year now. It is a super comfortable, supremely well made holster for this gun. I also really like his double mag pouch. I highly recommend it.

When I carry OWB, I like a simple Galco Concealable.

Haugen Handgun Leather makes excellent holsters, but they are a 8-12 week turnaround time. I carry my Sig in a Haugen SOB that happens to fit behind the hip very well, an untucked polo shirt is all it takes to conceal it.

I'm considering the Desantis Speed Scabbard for my XD 45 Service just for faster turn around time so I can get the Sig refinished.

I use 2 holsters for my XD-45 4".

First is the Don Hume open top belt hoster. For the price its a nice belt OWB holster.

Second is the Desanti's inner piece which I've been wearing for the last month. Great piece and very comfortable.

I have heard nothing but good things about the crossbreed supertuck and a large number of XD users that do use them sing their praises constantly (www.xdtalk.com is the XD forum) plenty of testimonial on them. I will be ordering one myself in the near future however there is quite a long wait period sometimes on crossbreeds holsters, but all reports I have seen have been very favorable.

Not sure where you live, but some local gun shops have the crossbreeds in stock. You may want to call around or even call Crossbreed to see if there are any dealers in your area.

I carry mine in a Blade-Tech OWB belt holster. Personally I would never have a holster that you have to push a button to get the gun out.
