I recently aquired my first M1A and look forward to putting rounds down range with it. Up til now the only .308 I own is a CETME which is a blast to shoot. But now that I own 2 guns in this caliber I think I need to stock up on more ammo. I've been buying the South African stuff in the brown battle packs because I've heard it's good ammo and I can get it for about $25 per pack (140 rnds).

Is this the best deal on the best ammo for plinking or should I look at something else?

it's the best deal. The Portuguese, Australian, Argentinian, and Malaysian are good but have mostly dried up.

STAY AWAY FROM THE INDIAN STUFF which is usually marked OFV. Note: some places sell Indian ammo in Aussie bandoleers. They don't SAY it's aussie, but they don't say it's indian either, so you get all excited thinking it's aussie and you end up buying crap ammo.

This bears repeating, over and over again.

Just incase you missed it, don't ever use the Indian ammo in your rifle, unless you want the rifle to blow up.

The Australian from SOG is supposedly decent ammo, but it is Berdan primed. You can't reload it.

I think the best deal going right now is at Ammoman. He has Lake City 2004 production for $139/500 or $249/1000 delivered. It is Boxer primed.

I plan to buy a case this week. It will make good reloading brass and AFAIK the primers are not crimped either.

I’m still working on some Portuguese and some Radway Green. The Port is berdan primed, but every bit as good as the RG, IMO. I’d rather spend the few extra $$ and get boxer primed milsurp, though.

Look here for some good deals: www.ammunitionstore.com. I always get my stuff from there, and you can do some calculations to find the "best" deal (for those of us always looking for that elusive deal, the pennies-per-round ratio is important :p ). They supply lots of makes and everything (commercial and surplus), and it is also delivered straight to your door. The only issue is that you have to make a phone call to order after you're in their database, but oh well. I like 'em  , YMMV.

Quality difference?

quick .308 ammo comparison question.

Federal 147 gr FMJ loose pack, lake city VS Wolf FMJ VS African battle pack surplus. Prices are all very similar. Any big difference in quality between these three?

Yep, the SA and LC are 7.62x51, the Wolff and Federal are .308 Win. My personal pick is the SA due to price with the LC a very close second.

Be careful. The only stuff at ammunitionstore.com that I would be willing to try is the Argentina-made "Australian contract" ammo, and I have no personal experience with it. Do NOT under any circumstances use the Indian or the "OFV" (the stuff with the bandoleers). OFV headstamp is Indian. There are lots and lots of reports out there about how bad that stuff is. It's blown up a lot of rifle. Personally, I wouldn't trust the Pakistani ammo, either.

Be careful.
I am. I don't use the ammo from a country where I wouldn't drink the water ;) . They have a good supply, but you have to use your head when deciding which country to order from--and NEVER from INDIA!!!! :what:

Georgia Arms! (Google, my friend)
I love the prices at the begining of this old thread! 140 rds for $25 These are selling for $80+ now I'm really feeling like a dumbass now for not buying cheap and stocking it deep when I could have.

The prices in the start of this thread are long gone. Notice the dates of the posts in 2005.
Ammoman is out of surplus .308 right now according to his website, but he did have Lithuanian boxer primed, good stuff, for I think $520/1000 shipped until he apparently ran out.

OH.. Ididn't realize the date of the thread started at 2005.. I thought it was 2008.. oops

i don't have any problem with old threads, they answer many questions without having to start at square one.

and this thread in particular chronicles price trends.
