I find myself ready (with 2 borrowed guns) to compete in the end of the month cowboy match at our local range. I need a gun rig for my pistols though and since money is tight I need a CHEAP beginners rig for a set of Rugers. Anyone got a place where I can get a reasonably priced beginners belt/holsters delivered before thanksgiving??

You might try Cabelas. I got a pair of cheap slim-jim holsters for my 1860s from them. They're nothing fancy, but they work fine. For SAAs, it looks like the cheapest they have are these.

Evil Ed:

Anyone who has ever looked at original 19th century photograohs (or copies of them) knows the the "real cowboys" never carried leather like that seen on "reel cowboys." You need a simple belt about 2 to 2 1/2 inchs wide, and two "Slim-Jim" style holsters. Besides Cableas, try Dixie Gun Works at:

www.dixiegunworks.com

Also, if you can get a piece of leather don't hesitate to make your own. This is the ultimate cheap way to go, and not dificult too do.

Try Big Ed

Try Big Ed

at San Pedro Saddlery

He is fast, usually has his beginer / basic stuff in stock, and his prices are at about what you'd pay for mass produced stuff. The value line is called "TOMBSTONE TERRITORIAL GUNLEATHER". I've got one of his basic 2 1/2" belts with 24 loops and a basic Tombstone gunfighter rig. It is top quality stuff. $50 for a holster and $65 for a good belt is not to expensive for handmade leather.

It all has his lifetime guarantee. Big Ed is well known in the CAS crowd. A genuine good guy.

Here is a poor picture of my rig: bisley3small.jpg

Good luck and enjoy the match,

I second the above recommendation on Big Eds. I bought some of the Oklahoma territory leather from Cabelas because I didn't want to spend a lot to get in the sport...completely regretted it. It was crap.

Big Eds stuff is first rate and he won't gouge you on the price. You can buy it from dealers on ebay as well.

Thanks for the recomendations guys! I'll be calling Big Ed's today to check on availability of one of his economy rigs.

Big Ed's stuff is heads above the 'cheap stuff' by Oklohoma leather. An OK Leather holster dumped out my pistol at a math and got me dq'd on the first stage.:( Lost my 95.00 match fee too.:( :(
Big Ed will fix ya up,but I think you are cutting it mighty fine on time.Might be beter to contact the local club and find some loaners until you can get the right stuff.
Enjoy the shoot!! I've been in it for five years now and still grinnin'.:)

I think you are right, haven't been able to catch him yet so I think I'll be calling around to the local cowboys looking for someone with a spare belt and holster. I might go ahead and order a cabela's 7.5" holster (left hand) for now since that might be a hard item to find on short notice (borrowing a 7.5" Ruger Vaquero in 45LC for the match since all I currently have is a single Ruger Blackhawk in .357). BTW, amazingly enough my SASS nick is "Evil Ed" SASS# 50918.
