I am in the market for a soft discreet gun case for my SAR-1 w/folding stock. I would like to use it as a range bag so mag pouches and pockets for my handguns are a plus. A friend of mine just got a TAC-FORCE case for his AR w/collapsable stock and I'll probably get that but I was wondering what you guys use.

How about a padded guitar case to stay under radar?

A beaten-up gym bag or softball bat/equiptment bag would also work to decrease nosy eyes from coveting your possessions.

Guitars and rifles.

I have a guncase that is plain, no brand markings, no mention of "gun" on it. I went to some music stores and bought several guitar makers stickers, band stickers, etc. Looks very inconspicuous. I have, though, had to fend off would be groupies. Wife was annoyed.

Don't know if it wouldwork for you, but I've heard of preople using golf bags...Not a likely target for theft, if there's no clubs sticking out!

I just got a Bucket Boss Long Boy from Amazon.com and it is going to be my gun tote bag. it is 24"x11"x9" with a nice shoulder strap it should be good urban camo for dragging guns in and out of the house in the city. B00002243U.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Now: $36.94 & this item ships for FREE with Super Saver Shipping. See details.

I did it for $6.94. If you buy it with a new amazon visa card they give you a $30 bonus, so I filled out an app and got approved in 30 seconds and went and completed the transaction, now I just have to pay the card ill and not use it for 6 months and call and have it cancelled. Never use credit cards 'cept for thing like this.

It is my understanding many States consider carrying a firearm in something that does not look like a gun case (i.e. guitar case, gym bag, softball bat/equipment bag, diaper bag, etc) as concealed carry. I’m sure you all know concealed carry without a permit is a long prison term in many States.

Here is an example from Arizona:

http://www.packing.org/oldnews/article/?article=10106
(ARS § 13-3102 (F)).”
“A weapon is not concealed, for the purposes of this provision, if the weapon is carried in a belt holster which holster is wholly or partially visible, or carried in a scabbard or case designed for carrying weapons (other than a “fanny pack,” purse, backpack, lunch box, briefcase, or other container that is specially designed to carry a weapon in a concealed manner) which scabbard or case is wholly or partially visible, … or carried in a container that is clearly labeled as containing a weapon.”

Although I think in some places a firearm carried partially disassembled so it can’t fire is not concealed carry. If this is true where you live, then a take-down rifle in one of the above suggested bags or cases might be OK.

In any event, I’d check my local laws carefully before I tried anything like this.

Most laws exempt things like gun bags especially when the person is going to and from the range.

I like some of the ideas posted maybe I can find a violin case that will fit! The I Shot case looks great but I'm trying to spend that much money.

I use a tool bag I bought at Lowes. It cost around $30.
Craftsman also makes some nice "tool" bags.
Check your local laws. NC is kind of easy going, as long
as the weapon is not "immediately accessable". I'd at least
keep the bag locked and in the trunk. A lot has to do with
the officer's first impression of you. I had an employee who
got a dui with a loaded shotgun behind the seat of his truck.
It was hunting season and he didn't get charged, with the weapon, at least :D
A friend's not very respectable looking son got pulled over one night
smoking whatever kids smoke these days. He had a realistic looking
pellet pistol under the back seat. He got a weapon charge as well
as being charged with whatever they were smoking. His father told me
the judge wasn't real amused and this one made an impression on the
young man.
The "tommygunner" violin case looks great. I want one. It might lead to
a serious misunderstanding if you happened to take it into a restaurant,
though, especially on St.Valentine's Day.

I live in IL. AFAIK, IL give a lot of leeway on what is considered a case for as transporting a firearm goes.

I rent and plus I really don't want people living around me to know I own guns. Rifle cases are pretly notiblie, so I have about music intrument cases.

I'm not sure how descreet you feel you need to be but I carry my AK w/scope in one of these. I figure most who will recognise it as a gun case won't care.

To get guns out of the house and into the car, will often place them (gun socked) into a golf bag and stick the little club covers on the barrel sticking out the top.

No...i don't golf...but usally can pick up a crappy set at a garage sale cheap.

Cn get way with a lot of things wraped tightly in bright colored material so long as you strap a set of ski poles on top.

I use a Russian drop case for mine. It will carry a full stock rifle with a brake and two loaded mags. It doesnt look like a rifle, especially when folded. If you want, you can also still use the rifles sling to carry it, or it can be stowed inside.
