I know this gets asked a lot, but I did a search and they were too dated...

I have a dpms lr-.308 in the mail and I need to feed it...I am going to buy a case of wolf for a cheap way to blow up water bottles and such, but I also want tiny groups...

1. What is a good factory load that won't break the bank whenever I want to shoot? How about this stuff?

2. What about match ammo for when I really need to get down to business?:)

PS. If you guys/gals know of a better place to find the 2 things listed, please tell me, or if there is something better I'd also like to know.

Thanks.

Yeah, thats not too bad of a price...

Does anyone have any experience with #1? As far as accuracy? Everywhere else I have looked, 500 rds is running about ~$310.

Also, I've read 3 zillion threads about wolf in an ar 15, buthow does wolf run in an "AR 10."

I'd like to try it, because its only ~30 cents a rd, but if it sucks then I don't want to bother.

Cheapest I've found (brass-cased, boxer-primed) is .308 Federal 150 gr SP at Wallyworld for $11 per 20-round pack.

Why not roll your own?

Definately in the near future...

I am slowly but surely aquiring all of the reloading components and I have 10's of 1,000's peices of brass, but I still have to have at least 1-2,000 rds on hand whenever the rifle comes or I just wouldn't feel complete.:p

I was figuring 500-1000 rds of wolf, 500 or so rds of the federal stuff I linked(#1) and then a couple hundred rds of match.

Plus, everytime I go to wally world, I can't help but get a couple of random boxes of ammo and since I don't have any .308 it'll probably be all .308 for awhile. By the time I go through all of the .308, I will have all the components and will have done my homework then I'll have enough brass to start reloading.

BTW, how much difference in accuracy would there be between this and this.(just trying to compare prices and see if it is worth the extra cost to buy new factory)

i say stay away from the military 118 match ammo it isn't worth the money that it cost, if you want some good match ammo i say go with balckhills and the federal match ammo is a good choice too,you should really try a few out and see which ones shoot best in your rifle, and then go that route, zero your rifle and record the dope and then you have all th einfo for your tack driving match type scearios and then get less expensive ammo to train and become prefecent with the weapon system with. and don't forget o have fun. btw congrats on the rifle i can't wait to read a range report.

that was the best price I had seen on GMM for a while... was going to order some until I realized my 9.5% TN sales tax kicked in... then it put it right up there with what I'm already paying.... :banghead:

I'd really think about skipping the Wolf. Spend just a little more on something like the new production Igman surplus or similar.

It's going to be about $70 more for 500 but soooo much difference both in cleanliness and accuracy.

That Wolf makes an absolute mess with my PTR91.

I think you will be surprised how well a quality surplus shoots.

Not sure how it compares to other factory ammo, but Georgia Arms' bulk .308 allows me to afford to nail tree stumps at 300 yards.

What stuff can I get for $70 more per 500...The closest I can find is that federal stuff and its $100 more per 500.
Last I'd checked, GA's Canned Heat is just under $500 per thousand rounds.

I was waiting for someone to tell me this...I kind of figured it's going to be hell cleaning the rifle afterwards...

Wolf doesn't bother me in my AR 15, because all I have used as far as optics is an eotech and an aimpoint with no magnification...My ar 10, on the other hand is going to be scoped so accuracy is going to matter a lot.

Edit: Like this?

How much better is the federal than the winchester?

Ammoman has some '07 production Igman 150gr ball in battle packs for $260/500 shipped. The Wolf price I saw last was $190/500 but everyone is out of stock.

The Wolf .308 seems to me to be a lot dirtier than in .223. I use Wolf in my ARs some and I don't have a problem with it but it was so filthy in my .308 that I can't stand it.

I ordered some after reading good reports on it. I don't know if the brass is NATO stamped but it is reloadable. The boxes say 7.62x51 but you never know whether it's NATO or not unless the headstamp is there.

Reason enough for me not to buy it.;)

So which is it then...I need to order it tonight so she's not hungry on thursday when I get her.:)

Within $250 give or take $30-40, which is the most accurate?

+1 on Georgia Arms Canned Heat.

The 150gr FMJ groups at just about 2 MOA out of my M1A, which is better than most anything else I've tried except Gold Medal, Ballistic Silvertip, and Hornady Custom/Match loads. In bulk, I want to say it comes out to be about $.47/round.

I really like Federal, for the price. I haven't tried their .308 but they make a darned good .30-06 for a little over 20 dollars a box.

I definitely would NOT use the WOLF ammo. The varnish melts in a hot chamber. I believe DPMS specifically says NOT to use the WOLF ammo in the LR308

This is right out of the DPMS manual:

They do not recommend
"C) Lacquer Coated Ammunition or Steel-cased, lacquer coated ammunition
The problem with this ammunition is the lacquer coating on the case. As the barrel heatsup, the lacquer turns to a soft, varnish substance and upon cool down, becomes very solid and difficult to remove. This effectively creates an undersized chamber and creates understandable problems."

WOLF ammo has not been made with a varnish or lacquer coating in many years. The current Wolf ammo has a polymer coating that does not melt or come off.

5 or 6 years ago what you say was true, but no longer.

Wolf is inaccurate, leaves a filthy powder residue, smells like hell, but it won't HURT anything and the coating doesn't melt off unless you are shooting some of the old stuff.

It's perfectly fine low cost ammo in the current production form.

Yep, Mr. Rifleman is correct, if I bought anything new, its going to have a polymer coating. But it is still dirty as heck and not all that accurate.

So I guess I am going to flip a coin between the federal or the canned heat.

Or maybe both.:)

Take in account for shipping if your ordering offline. Sure that NATO stuff is only like $270 but shipping can be up to $50 if not more. Weight and HAZMAT shipping apply to all ammo, IIRC.

That's one of the nice things about ammoman.com, his prices include shipping to the domestic US so it is $260/500 delivered.

Still a shame .308 is going for that much though. Seems to be no light at the end of that tunnel.....

Tell me about it.

I guess I'm gonna go and figure out the shipping between the two and decide from there.

I have to figure out something soon, because I went to wally world last night and all they have are some Winchester SP's and they are ~$17.00 a box.
