Hi guys, I am looking to do some light load reloading for .30-30 and .30-06! with 165gr RN bullets!

I am looking to achieve ~ 1500fps for the .30-30 I have been considering H4895 19grs and H4198 16grs with 160gr RN bullets!

For the .30-06 ~ 1800fps I am really not sure what loads to use to push the .30-06 this slow!

Has anyone got experience of producing either of these type of loads?

Thanks

Reduced loads below with Dupont SR-4759
(if you need more killing power just dip your bullets in a little Vegemite, the shock will kill them instantly) :D

Hogdons H4895 and Trail Boss also make good reduced loads.

From Speer reloading manual # 9
.308 165 grain round nose Speer bullet
powder weight
25.0 1911 fps
23.0 1813 fps
21.0 1640 fps

Reduced loads for my .303 British Enfield rifles using 100 grain .312 pistol bullets. ;)

These loads work great at night with my Paul Hogan magnum Roo light.

Sorry I've spent too much time in Enfield forums with the Ozmanics............

I find the hodgdons youth loads work fine in 30-06.
I load the 125gr with 40.5 gr of h4895. Works for me, reduced recoil.

In 30-06 I got 1260 FPS with a 147gr using 8gr Bullseye. Blue Dot, Unique, or 2400 might push it a little faster.

I've used Bkue Dot in my 30-30 Contender pistol. Works fine but I have no idea what the muzzle velocity was. I didn't have a Chronograph at that time, and I rarely shoot this barrel anymore.

If you have a Lyman's reloading manuel it will often give you light load recomendations.

Haven't loaded 30-06, but for a really light load for 30-30, this is what I use. 7.2grs of Unique and a 170 cast bullet. Not sure of the fps, but this is a fun plinker. You can see it here: http://www.pixagogo.com/5654974321 Click on a pic to make it bigger, then click on original at the top if ya want to blow that pic up.

If at all possible go to MBC & look over the cast that`s available for the 30 calibers .

7-9grs of reddot for the turdy-turdy & 16grs. of 2400 for the 06 , nice soft not so loud shooting fun & fps is around 15-1600 fps for both .

In the marlin336 recoil is non existent & in my 700 it`s comparible to a 22mag .

Alot of fun & accuracy will suprise ya once ya dial em in to the site.

What is your purpose for light loads, recoil, cost, plinking etc?

Mostly reduced recoil and plinking at the range! But also working up different loads for the .30-06 to use on different game!

I want to work up a plinking load! A load for small game like foxes equivalent to a .222 rem, a load for medium game somewhere between a .243 win and a .270 win, and full loads for large game!

H4895 is great for reduced loads to heavy loads. Unique and other pistol powders work for reduced loads. I like the 100 hornady or speer plinkers in 30-30. Your load of H4895 for 165 CB is about right. If it is J-B, I'd start mid range load and work up(hunting) and down(for light loads). You might want a light dacron filler for the lighter loads, for accuracy.

I don't have light loads for the 06 but for 30-30 I like cast bullets, hard lead, 170 flat nose and I load between 7-9 grains of Unique. I'm not sure of the velocity, but I know it's over 1100 fps. I like these at 50 - 100 yards. I found the recipe in the Hogdon cast load book. Great fun round.

Not exactly super reduced, but :

31 gr of h4895 underneath a 150gr sierra flat nose is both remarkably accurate, and of shoulder saving grace in my book.

A case full (Loaded to base of bullet) of Trail Boss in .30-30 with a 110 Gr Carbine bullet gives me around 1200+ FPS from my Winny 94.

To get where you want to go you will need SR-4759 or AA 5744. Perhaps IMR 4895 loaded down will do it.

H4895 is rated for reduced loads, I don't see that IMR 4895 is. I don't think you can get 243 performance out of the 30-30, possibly with the 06, i.e. no 400yd coyote shoots with 30-30.
