Hi guys,

I have been shooting .30-30 for a bit now, and as most of my shooting is at the range at a 100 yards I am looking to make some light loads!

I am planning on loading a 165gr bullet RNFP, and I want to achieve about 1500fps, but from data out there from IMR it does look like Trail Boss, could push a 165gr bullet past 1100fps!

I just wondered if any of you had made up any loads like this it doesn't have to be 1500, but 1250 - 1600fps!

Thanks

I shot one .30-30 round with a 110 Gr .30 Carbine SP and a case full of Trail Boss. (Filled to base of bullet) I got 1216 FPS from my Winchester Model 94.

Results should be similar with a 165 Gr bullet. Real slow with light recoil.

Some load data from the Lyman cast bullet manual,I use 8 grs. Red Dot with my Lee 170 gr. RNFP bullets gas check is left off and bullet is given two light coats of Lee Alox/JPW lube. You can use 165gr. bullets with this data.

170 gr. cast bullets

Red Dot 6.5 grs. 1159 fps. 8.5 grs. 1348 fps.

Unique 7.0 grs. 1240 fps. 10.6 grs. 1555 fps.

SR-4756 7.0 grs. 1102 fps. 10.5 grs. 1423 fps.

Red Dot test load at 50 yds. with my old Sav. 30-30 pump gun.

So I am looking at subsonic with velocities with trail boss, I guess it would be good at 50 yards, just not sure about 100!

PHP:
170 gr. cast bullets

Red Dot 6.5 grs. 1159 fps. 8.5 grs. 1348 fps.

Unique 7.0 grs. 1240 fps. 10.6 grs. 1555 fps.

SR-4756 7.0 grs. 1102 fps. 10.5 grs. 1423 fps.

do you use fillers with these loads?

The Hodgdon website lists both H4198 (15.0-17.0gr) and H4895 (17.5-21.0gr) loads with a 160gr bullet that sound like what you are looking for.

Did you mean to write SR-4756 or SR-4759??

The data I posted is correct, you can find it in either the Lyman #49 manual or Lyman cast bullet manual but if you want to use SR-4759 Lyman list it as well. The Red Dot load only appears in the Lyman cast manual.

Lyman #49
*SR-4759 14.8 grs. 1530 fps. 18.5 grs. 1862 fps.

* Denotes use of CCI 200 Primer.

do you use fillers with these loads?

No filler needed with these loads.

SR 4756 is horribly position sensitive. I would never consider it for reduced rifle loads. SR 4759 was designed expressly for reduced rifle loads.

For loads with higher velocity than obtainable from Trail Boss you would have to use a light load of Unique or preferably SR-4759 which was designed for reduced loads.

If you want light loads, minimum recoil AND accuracy @100, use the carbine bullets and unique or other pistol powder. Slow bullets means lots of drop.

Speer makes a great HPFN of 110 grains for the 30-30. Lots of soft lead with a jacket and a crimp groove. It works great in light and full power loads. With H335 you can get them up close to 2600 fps.

Check those out. I think you will like those as well.

I use 1.0cc of Unique in my .30-06 with a 165 grain lead bullet. No chrono but they are very pleasant to shoot and very accurate. Don't get any leading with them either.

All the Best,
D. White
