What is your favorite powder for loading the 30-30? I will probably be using a 170gr bullet most times but just might load a 160gr Hornady or 150gr bullet too. I was thinking of using BL-C2, H4895 or W748 but any and all suggestions are welcome. I'm not necessarily looking for the highest velocity, more so I'm looking for top accuracy. The 30-30 is what it is so if I want big velocity numbers I'll shoot a 30-06... ;)

Any real world advice will be appreciated.

I like IMR 3031 or H380. I think the 3031 would be would be a better all around powder honestly tho. I used mostly 3031.

I started out years ago loading 150gr Speer with 3031 and it has worked well in all 20" lever guns tested. Recently I've been loading the 160gr Hornady FTX over H4895 with a charge a bit over the recommended Hornady data maximum.
I've yet to give it a good test for accuracy but chrongraphed an average of 2080fps in a Win 94.

The two powders you listed are two of my favorite three for the .30/30. (BLC2 and Win748 are the same powder. Hodgdon markets/sells both now, and list same exact data. The differences you see in the older data is that there is some variation in different lots, and powders have been sold for over 40yrs now.)

The third and my current favorite is Reloader15. I'm getting near (occasionally better) than MOA from my '70's vintage Marlin/Glenfield M30 leveraction (20"bbl, half-magazine, w/birch stock).

My current preference is the 170gr Remington Corlokt. Second favorite is the 150gr Corlokts. These are available in bulk from MidSouth, MidwayUSA, or Grafs, ect.

Because of the extreme cost of bullets these days, I may not buy anymore. My cast bullets do just about as well as the jacketed and 30.0gr of RL15 pushes the 160gr cast bullet as fast as 34.0 pushes the 170gr CorLokt. (2,300fps). I use 36.0gr RL15 w/150 Corlokt crimped to cannulure w/Lee factory crimp die for 2,400fps. I use 34.0gr w/170 Corlokt for 2,300fps.

My brother who has hunted all over N.America and parts of Europe killed his largest deer two yrs ago with his .30/30 (he normally usually uses a Rem M700 in .30/06 w/scope). He took the deer on the run with his second shot from his Win M94 at 70yds w/reciever sight. The deer weighed over 220lbs, and had 10pts w/20" spread. He was using the Hornady 150RN and 33.0gr of H4895 for a chrono's 2,300fps. Works for him !

About 15yrs ago I had a large quantitiy of H322. It was very accurate with the 125 and 130gr bullets but not as fast as either BLC2/Win748 with the bullets heavier than 130gr.

Many powders give good results with the .30/30 but the ones I mentioned gave superior results. YMMV

Goosegestapo...Where do you get your specs for those velocities. In a 20" barrel of a Winchester or Marlin those velocities are not obtainable.

ArchAngelCD
32 grains of W-748 under a 170 grain Speer Hotcore FN in Winchester or Remington cases, CCI-200 primer. 2100 fps +/- a few...

30-30 powder

I've had outstanding results using H335 powder launching a 150 gr Rem Core-Lokt. I'm not at the shop so I can't tell you charge weights but that would be up to you to work up.

i changed over to varget under 150 gr rem corelokts and get good accuracy. i dont chrono things so i have no idea about velocity.

Since about 1970, my favorite in 30-30 is IMR3031.
It will NOT get top velocity, it burns too fast.
But if each load is scaled carefully, it's very consistent.
Same in 223 Remington with light bullets, but nobody believes that.
Probably because they don't want to scale each load individually.

I used IMR 3031 with a 130 grn speer Hot core. I was trying to duplacate the reduced recoil Remingtons for my kids. out of my 1965 M94 I was getting 2150 fps. and 1'' at 100 yds.

Bushmaster:
My chrono and my 20" bbls.
With Federal cases, Federal #210 primers, seated to cannulure and crimped.
Remember in Georgia, 90's temps are the norm 6mos of the year.... So, in September, temps are still in '90's in the afternoon, in the shade.....
so that might be part of the equation.

I have an Alliant manual circa early '90's that indeed does list these velocities from a 20" bbl. Later manuals list 24" bbls.

Not all lot#'s however will break 2,400fps w/150gr bullet.
I've found that factory loaded Winchester 150gr HP run 2,275fps and have 35.6gr of what appears to be Win748, which my rifle duplicates. However with a max load of 37.5gr of Win748, and temps above the mid '70's, it too will break 2,400fps fro a 20" bbl. You only get approx 25fps from each additional inch of bbl with the .30wcf.

My brothers load of 33.5gr of H4895 runs 2,325 from both his and my chrono's and is from a 20"bbl M94. Again, temp's in the mid '70's deg.Farenheit.

I've also gotten 2,300's fps form 170's from both 20" and 24" Marlin .30wcf barrels with H414. low with the 20" and high with 24"bbls. Old data from the late 70's and early 80's however......
I'vd even gotten 2,650fps from a 125gr Sierra HP from a 24" Marlin M336C and early lot#'s of H322. Later lot#'s only get 2,550fps or so. Later lot#'s are somewhat faster burning than the early surplus quatities....

Never say Never !!!

I was starting to wonder if I was the only one that used Accurate 2460 in the 30-30. That is what I started with about 20 years ago in a marlin 30AS and a Contender with a Super 14" barrel. Favorite load for the contender fealt like a 30-06 in the rifle but was not bad in the pistol and darn accurate to boot. I will not post the load, but it had a nosler 125gr ballistic tip on it. :what:

Another vote for 3031. I have had good results with 150 and 170 grain corelokts in a 336 and model 94.

Jim

Thanks for all the information guys. Since I already have 3031, 4895 and 4064 I'll pick up a pound of W748 and try them all. I'll let my rifle pick which it likes best. If those don't work out well I'll buy some RL15 and try that one too. Hey, all that means is I'll have to send more rounds down range. What a terrible thing to do, no??? LOL
