"But the fire has gone out of President Obama’s goal of restricting the availability of firearms. “I don’t know of any plans,” said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs, to seek an assault weapons ban from Congress.

Attorney General Holder admitted as much when asked, during a recent session with reporters, whether he expected any push for a ban this year to curb the flow of guns from the United States to Mexico.

His answer could have come straight from the National Rifle Association: “I think what we’re going to do is to try to, obviously, enforce the laws on the books.”

The story mentions that the number of ATF inspectors has remained relatively unchanged since 1990, in contrast to other law enforcement agencies where the number of agents has risen. The story insinuates that more inspectors are needed to combat all the illegal purchases taking place at FFL's.

I thought that the number of FFL's has declined since 1990, so in reality, there should be more inspectors per FFL now then there was 20 years ago.

Don't forget also, that we didn't have the Heller ruling in '94 for the 1st fed AWB. I'm not certain a new AWB would pass Heller muster. Nancy Pelosi even hinted at this.

News stories about how there won't be a new ban only serve to put the issue front and center in the media.

If people weren't considering ways to try to reinstate the ban, there wouldn't be news stories about it.

If you trust them, you are an idiot. They are always just waiting for the right time.

That is all.

People are ALWAYS looking for a way to reinstate the ban. The story says that they aren't succeeding. To me, that's good news. Not any reason to relax or stick one's head in the sand, but good news just the same.

I love the closing quote:
Gun control, once considered a soccer-mom issue popular in suburban America, is again radioactive.

With just a little bit more effort we can push gun control onto the coveted "third rail" of politics.

If Obama does not want an AWB, then why is this still on his website at whitehouse.gov:

Address Gun Violence in Cities: Obama and Biden would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent.

I recall a fable that has been told to many. The players in the story change from time to time, but the message is always the same.

Anyone remember the tale of the scorpion and the frog?

Thankfully, we are neither. But keep an eye out!

It's yet another broken campaign promise?

Don't deceive yourselves. They'll eventually push for an AWB and more.

Those of you lucky enough to live in states that respect the 2nd Amendment need to realize what's happening in the Blue Gulags. Those of us in Illinois KNOW how the current occupant of the White House feels about the RKBA.

We currently have the most anti-gun president and congress in U.S. history. Do you really think they're going to give up that easily?

Obama and the congressional leaders will push for a ban as soon as it's politically feasible. Either after midterm elections, or after his (assumed) reelection. It will happen, mark my words.

Personally, I think the only reason we're hearing so much right now about how they've "abandoned" the ban is because they're trying to lull us into complacency. We need to NEVER stop pushing on this issue. The other side won't.

I'm pretty certain that this is a politically strategic step. Why would the government tell us they're NOT going to do something? Why wouldn't they just move the task to the back of the line?

I'll tell you why. The recent run on guns has stirred up a huge commotion in the media. They're running episodes of 60 Minutes and 20/20 about it. CNN has blurbs about it frequently during the week. It even affected the stock market! By now America knows there's a run on guns and ammo, and most of us know why.

What do that anti's want to achieve with this step? To get guns out of our hands of course! If they tell us "we're not going to take them away", we should respond by NOT buying up arsenals of scary black guns and cleaning out the ammo stock of our local Wally World, right? This move is pure damage control.

Frankly, they had to do something. The more people that own guns, the weaker their argument gets, and this is their first try at quelling the run. Something tells me this won't stop it though. They're going to have to come up with a better response than "never mind". They're probably going to have to lift some laws to show the gun owners that they're serious.

As other have noted - DON'T GET COMFORTABLE. They're resting and regrouping. Even Feinstein said in a TV interview that she's waiting for the right time to throw propose this legislature again. They'll be back.

I'd agree with MovedWest on this one. One of the stores in my area that sells bulk ammo has a picture of Obama up with the tagline "firearms salesman of the year". They've been moving a LOT of bulk ammo too. It took me awhile to find a Springfield M1A in the current market and admittedly I'm kinda hoarding ammo myself to a certain extent. The next gun I'd buy would most likely be something like a Sig 556 and I'd most assuradely hoard 5.56 x 45 and mags at that point. I just saw a story on King 5 News about a week ago on how people were buying up guns and getting CCPs in the Seattle WA area.

So I agree completely with MovedWest. Obama and his Attorney General have created a run on guns, mags, and ammo and this is probably just a smoke screen to try and slow down the current sky high demand. Personally, I'd continue buying up everything you can find at the moment and writing your congressman.

It's very clear the Obamanites all want it reinstated. Nobody is under the illusion they do not want it. All they are saying is that they don't have the support to actually do it. Their intentions simply do not align with their capabilities, that's all. It's up to us, the American People to make sure it stays that way. THEY WORK FOR US!!!!!

I agree that Obama and his staff would love to pass an awb, at the least. But here is the good news, which most of you know. Republicans lost big in congress in the last few elections, but they were replaced with moderate Democrats. Congressional districts do not go from republican, to extreme democratic, in just a few elections. As is evident in the 60 something dems who wrote the letter opposing the awb. Yes Pelosi, Obama, Clinton, Holder and so on, would love to ban as many guns as possible, but we have some good Democrats in office who are moderate unlike the situation in 94. I am young (23) and conservative, voted for Mccain (R) -Dreamed for Ron Paul- as pres, Dole (R) as sen, and McIntyre (D) for congress. I voted for McIntyre because he had done no wrong by me, since proved by his signing of the awb op letter. Yes a democratic controlled congress and President is scary, but the republicans dropped the ball in the last several year and lucky for us most of their replacements are on our side. Sorry this got so long.

from article said:
In this Nov. 2008 photo, a soldier stands guard during a presentation of seized weapons. Mexico insists the U.S. do more to stop the gun smuggling that is arming the world's most powerful drug cartels with U.S. assault rifles.

I insist that Mexico do more to enforce their own laws and protect their own citizens, but I hope and pray that they can do so safely without more needless loss!

That's all that I think there is to say about that photo.

Fellas down there in Mexico got some big cajones that are actually doing their jobs.
