A Gun Ban Gets Shot Down
By Michael Isikoff | NEWSWEEK

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is now the second member of President Obama's cabinet to get shot down by the White House over the politically sensitive issue of assault weapons. After meeting with Mexican President Felipe Calderón, Clinton said that reinstating the U.S. ban on assault weapons—which was passed in 1994 and expired in 2004—is one step this country could take to curb the flow of guns to Mexico's drug cartels. "These military-style weapons don't belong on anybody's street," Clinton told NBC. Within hours, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters that he was unaware of "any plans" to push for such a ban—even though Obama had backed one during last year's campaign.

Attorney General Eric Holder had a similar experience a few weeks earlier. After he endorsed a ban at a Feb. 25 press conference, Justice officials were instructed by White House aides to drop the issue, according to administration and congressional aides who asked not to be named due to political sensitivities. What's behind the shift? A budding relationship between the gun lobby and Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill. After Holder mentioned the ban, the National Rifle Association sent out action alerts to its members and bombarded Hill offices with calls. Sixty-five House Dems dashed off a letter to Holder opposing such a ban, while Speaker Nancy Pelosi—echoing the NRA's mantra on all gun-control issues—said she backed "enforcing the laws we have now."

NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre told NEWSWEEK that Hill Democrats have "learned their lesson" from 1994, when they enacted the ban and subsequently lost control of Congress. They've also learned that cozying up to the NRA can pay big dividends. Last year Democrats received 20 percent of the nearly $1.2 million that the NRA pumped into congressional campaign coffers—more than twice what it gave to Dems just six years earlier. The way things are going, this could be more than a shotgun wedding.

I had seen the topic of the 65 Dems sending a letter to Holder, but found the rest of the article very enlightening.
A glimmer of hope, perhaps, and easy on the change.

I have been saying all along that gun control is more of a non-starter than it ever has been. A hundred people are going to flame me for saying this of course...and that's OK because these same people are working hard and really care about our rights...so more power to them.

Money talks (the NRA and gun owners have it) and BS walks (and gun control is just that).

Keep writing those Congressmen...I just hooked up with the Second Ammendment Coalition or whatever they are called. There is an outfit that needs our support. They are mostly Democrats that are either a) genuinely pro-gun, or b) understand the situation well enough to know that this is not a real issue for them and is not worth loosing their seats over...even if they are not particularly pro-gun personally...because they serve pro-gun constituents.

All I am saying is Congress is just not as commited to gun control as it would appear.

I don't know if it as much of a learning from 1994 as it is an acceptance of the current social climate. They are probably not understanding how crazy the gun market is right now any more than any of us. I guess there are a few of them that aren't grasping how important guns are to us, like Clinton and Holder, but for now it seems that others are going to keep them in check at least until the gun issue dies down a little.

the ban the guns folks on the hill wouldn't even go to wallmarts if it wern't for ss with them. (with their nasty, nasty guns.)

I joined the NRA this morning for the first time ever. And I was pleasantly surprised to read this article afterward. I know the NRA gets mixed reviews here on THR, but to me they seem to be doing a good job of helping keep the Democratic-controlled government in check when it comes to gun issues. I think they have the ears of the Blue Dogs and, in turn, the Dem leadership cannot ignore the growing number of Blue Dogs.

Thanks Crashola. The bigger the membership numbers, the bigger the hammer the NRA can wield.

A mere lullabye.

An alarm clock:

Firearms
We recognize that the right to bear arms is an important part of the
American tradition, and we will preserve Americans’ Second
Amendment right to own and use firearms. We believe that
the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation,
but we know that what works in Chicago may not work in
Cheyenne. We can work together to enact and enforce
commonsense laws and improvements – like closing the
gun show loophole, improving our background check system,
and reinstating the assault weapons ban, so that guns do not
fall into the hands of terrorists or criminals. Acting responsibly
and with respect for differing views on this issue, we can both
protect the constitutional right to bear arms and keep our
communities and our children safe.

That pretty much sums it up. Until they remove that paragraph from their published party platform it's all just smoke and mirrors.

They have as a documented goal of the party the reinstatement of an "assault weapon" ban.

If the realization is they won't be able to get it done, why is it still in the platform?
