Good news for Florida CCW hopefuls

A lot of you, like me, may have been frustrated because your local county sheriff's office has been out of CCW application packets. Hillsborough County has been out of them for months.

Good news! You can now get everything that's in the packets, including the reference materials and application forms, on line!

Yes, I know, this won't speed up your application, once it's been submitted, but at least you can get to the submission phase a lot quicker!

Any idea how long it is taking to process the apps nowadays?

How long to process?

I believe they have 90 days to either approve the application or deny it for casue, or, if a disqualiifying legal action is pending against you, to inform you of that fact. If there is no reason to deny your application within 90 days of submittal, then it is automatically approved.

From what I think I know, this was a factor in getting Gov Crist to veto a budget proposal which would have raided the coffers set aside to process these applications. The law says that the money you send in with your application can only be used for the operation of the CCW processing system. The budget proposal would have raided these funds, against the letter and spirit of the law, and dropped them into the general fund. Thje offices that process the applications were getting backlogged, and raiding the fund would have forced the state to automatically approve a bunch of applications.

At least that's what I heard.

BTW: I'm just finishing my lesson plans for a CCW class I intend to teach. If you need instruction and wouldn't mind being a test subject, I'll run you through it for free, thus satisfying the training requirement for the application, provided you wouldn't mind giving me feedback on how to improve the organization and content of the instruction.

Wow I didn't know you could go to the local Sheriff's department. I always just gave my students (I'm an NRA certfied pistol instructor, and taking one of our classes counts as the qualifier for the CWP) the Department of Agriculture website and directions on how to get it. I also usually order 9 of each a week for those classes of only 9 or fewer people. I'm always trying to be sitting on an extra twenty at any given time. Granted with the larger classes(got 35 to do the shooting portion with on July 5) I don't do the shooting portion and lecture portion in the same day and when I get a phone call scheduling a class, I give them the information to get the packets ahead of time. And I've got a four week backload right now technically(for those classes I have to use an assistant with[a current or ex-marine and war veteran]). Well good luck to you. I have had students getting their permits after only a 100 days or so from sending it out overnight.

Before I had gotten my CCW here in FL and went through the process years back, I was able to get the packets from local gun stores and/or ranges that held classes. Of course they would prefer that you took the class with them, but they had no problem if you didn't and were happy to hand over a packet or two.
Gun shows too, but I didn't go the show route. I went with a local range that works with an instructor. He was great, the class he ran was top notch, and I got to do live fire drills that I never thought I would get the chance to do.
Too bad I can't do that on my regular trips there... Actually, you can't "grow" much at my range as a shooter. It's really getting boring, and I know some of my skills have been stunted because of it. I've been trying to find other places, but for one reason or another, no luck.

Yoda, MagnumDweeb, it's great to hear you hold classes. It sounds like you do something similar to what my instructor did, and none of this "one shot at a target, here's your certificate" stuff.
