Good quality gun safes?

What are some of your recommendations for a good gun safe? I want it for multiple rifles in addition to handguns. I'm trying to stay under a $1000, but any suggestions are appreciated.

I've been looking at Fort Knox safes (http://www.ftknox.com) and they seem really nice, but even their cheapest ones are over a grand.

Cannon and Liberty safes are pretty good and less expensive than the Ft. Knox.

Raalize that all gunsafes are rated for LESS THAN 15 MINUTES if the person knows what they are doing. So dont let anyone tell you otherwise. Time rated safes are huge!!! I mainly wanted somthing heavy and fireproof. Do yourself a favor and bolt it to the floor. A lot of gun safes are stolen and then opened elsewhere. Any of the big brands will do you fine. CHampion was started by a Liberty defector. They copied a lot of the ideas.

Smart thieves don't go through the safe door. They just cut a hole in the side and voila! No guns. Bolt it to the floor like Jeeper suggests. Don't let them push it onto the back of a truck and work at it in the leisure of their garage.

In terms of bang for the buck (which is an expression that REALLY fits gun safes! ), I like the Liberty line. They make their safes in two versions: a high-gloss-paint finish with all the trimmings, which costs big bucks, and the same safe mechanically (with a few less bolts in the door, but still sufficient), in a matte gray finish, for a lot less. IIRC, you can get a 25-long-gun-capacity safe in the latter line for $700-$800. If you find prices significantly higher, try bargaining, and look around the Web - there are deals out there.

Try Costco....

My local Costco (WA State) has a nice Cannon with the electronic lock for less than $700. This was the best deal going that I found for a decent gun safe that was also fire-rated. Size is approx. 60"x30"x22" and weight is 530 lbs.

Mr. F, Academy sports (DFW area) has the 530 lb Cannon without electronic lock for $599.00 - not a bad price for that big of a safe.

You might also look at Amsec - I think American Security. They have several reasonable models.

WARNING - DO NOT buy the electronic keypad lock! Knowledgeable crooks can bypass this lock with the aid of a 9V battery. I'm not going to post details about it in a public forum, for obvious reasons, but both re1973 and I have had this demonstrated to us (separately) by ex-cons. It's much safer to have the traditional Sargent & Greenleaf combination/key lock. If you already have an electronic lock on your safe, I'd strongly recommend replacing it with the older, but more thief-proof lock.

I shopped around and did a lot of research and ended up with a Browning safe.

Time- and tool-rated safes are the best but are very expensive and very, very heavy.
