Hi everyone,

I own a savage mark II GL .22 caliber bolt action rifle and I was looking to get a sling for it. I don't know how to use one properly for aiding in shooting yet, but I plan to learn. My needs right now are to be able to carry my rifle when in the field. It has the holes for a sling but I think I will also need to get the swivel mounts as well. Any advice would be great, and as for price I want to keep it around 20 bucks tops.

i just picked up a 1.25" leather 'military sling' by triple k (style 64-a) from cabela's for $17.99. it seems to be of reasonably good quality (i'll know more in the next month as i'll be campaigning it during our sporting rifle competition season this year). but, during practice and dry fire sessions w/ it, i'm happy so far.

as for using the sling, google the term 'proper use of a military sling' and you'll get plenty of info and youtube videos on how to do it.

most people confuse the term 'sling' and 'carrying strap'. they are two different things. a carrying strap (what is on most rifles) is of limited assistance to accuracy, but comfy for carrying the rifle. a sling is of tremendous assistance to field position accuracy, and carries a rifle ok. if you are after a carrying strap, just pick one that looks like it is rough enough to not slip off your shoulder while walking.

I had an old Freeland sling that I finally wore out after 30 years, so I bought a new one this year from Champions Choice. It's a Gehmann sling, similar to one I used when I shot on the college team. Still getting used to it, but I think I'm going to like it in the long run.

The military sling is really versatile, and dresses the rifle nicely and in a functional way. It's available from the "usual sources".

It can be used as a "hasty sling" when time is limited, or as amore stable sling for long range use.

Almost any veteran can coach you in its use. I remember what I was taught about it half a century ago.

For your application, I should think something like the Uncle Mike's 'Super Sling' (1 1/4") would be good.

If you want leather, there are numerous adjustable (for the different shooting positions) out there, a Googlematic search will help you decide.

Brownells sells a nice competition type leather sling that is one of the standards in slings but they are expensive.

Check out Numrich Arms and Sarco, these guys often times have milsurp. leather slings in the 3/4" to 1" width for very little cost, and the slings often are new or like new.

Thanks for all the replies. dakotasin, I really like that triple K sling but I was wondering what kind of hardware do I need to attach it? My rifle only has little "pegs" with a hole in them. (sorry I do not know the term for them).
