Good side of powder shortage

I agree. During the shortages of 2009, I bought True Blue as my standard 9x19 powder was no where to be found.

I ending up liking True Blue.

THAT'S like saying a torrential FLOOD's a good thing, because it enables us to work on our ROWING technique! No thanx!

That is a bit of a plus. I now have Longshot, which I wouldn't have if I could find HS-6. I tried IMR rifle powders when I couldn't find Hodgdon. I now have H4198, H4895, H322, H414, IMR 4064, IMR 4320 and IMR 8208 XBR. All powders I probably wouldn't have bought if I could get what I wanted.

Well like I figured it this way, if you can't have the powder you love then love the powder you have (or at least can get). :)

People are learning to develop and use new loads based on what has been available and that isn't always a bad thing. Many hand loaders have found new loads that in some cases shoot better than what they were shooting.

I don't know, having to be only able to find a lb online and then pay the hazmat fee takes the saving money part away. I have tried some powders I wouldn't have tried. I'm not sure how much of a fan of titegroup I am, very light loads making it harder to find double charges. Works just fine though. In fact all the powders I've tried work fine, AA#7, V320, Titegroup.

Possible. But it beats being out in the flood without oars at all.

I now have good alternate powder loads for many of my handgun cartridges. It opens up options when powders become scarce.

I do not necessarily have to inventory the alternate powders during the good times, but as shortages loom, I have less worry of running out of powders.

I found bullseye today. I was really surprised. Grabbed a pound. Bullseye and unique are my standbys.

Did you find that bullseye online or local? How much was it, if you don't mind my asking? :what:

I spent a year looking for bullseye both online and by calling gun shops. I picked up 8 pounds for $24.95 a pound two weeks ago at a gun store an hour away.

I picked up a few pounds of Bullseye at the Columbus, Ohio Cabela's a few weeks ago. Forget what I paid but I don't recall it being out of line. Gave my brother one of my two pounds last week. Anyway, I have recently seen Bullseye around. Little by little.

It allows us to climb out of a rut and have some real fun working up new loads. Catpop
I can tell you... I like my rut and I don't want to climb anywhere. Never did I think this shortage would last this long. I'm guessing it will let up in late 2016. I don't think the 2008 shortage really ended or if it did it came right back in 2010. It's been a good 4 years now with no powder, no primers, no ammo and few bullets. At least some of the ammo and primers are back the past month or so.

It has not lasted since 2010.
I started reloading again in the summer of 2010. Any powder or primers I wanted from Powder Valley right up through January, 2013.
I had enough 38 Super and 45 ACP bullets to carry me through the slight slowdown in bullet shipments. Any bullets I want will be on my doorstep in about three days.

Heh! Actually...a torrential flood IS a good thing. It spreads nutrient-rich material throughout the flooded region, for one. Why do you think river valleys are so fertile in the first place?

:neener:

But I do agree with the OP somewhat, because any time there are shortages, it forces people to streamline, economize, and optimize as they work through the bad times. When we come out of such times, we gain greater respect for what we have, a greater level of experience and knowledge, and an eye for how to better prepare ourselves for any such future occurrences.

lol glass half full kinda guy, huh?

lovin my rut, but working up loads is fun!

just not every month or two..

Powder situation still sucks

Pretty soon I will have to start converting my pistols to natural gas or propane. Guess the Govt. will have to impose an 11% excise tax on it also.

It's not any fun for a younger reloader like myself I work all day and have younger kids at home and I can't make it to the lgs everyday I'm lucky if I can make it once a month even then I'm lucky if I even make it then
What I'm trying to say is that people that have the means to make it to the lgs everyday to check and see what new shipment made it in that day have a lot better chance of finding pistol powder. I agree that it can be fun to try new powders and work them up. But for me I have a better chance of winning the power ball then to find a lb of pistol powder . So for me the powder shortage really sucks . Because I can remember 3-4 years ago I could just walk into any gun shop and buy any powder I wanted and that was fun

You need to find a reloading ally. I'm retired and I do have the time to look around locally but i have several shooting/reloading buddies who are still working. I have a list of their powder and primers needs and if I see any of it i pick it up for them. I have even loaned a few buddies a pound or two of powder until they can buy more.

These are probably the worst times I've ever seen and that goes back to the Clinton days. Hopefully this will end sooner than later. I really feel for the new reloaders trying to get into the hobby...

Think so? So close to the next presidential election? If it's not better by Spring 2016 it won't be better going into 2017. Just my thoughts.
