I know it's a bit OT, but since he's High Road "Family", I thought I'd pass it along.
Got a letter from Balog today. He's in Boot Camp at San Diego (God save us from those Hollywood Marines
). He's doing pretty well for himself so far. He's been made the platoon scribe, which means he's showing potential. For those not familiar with it, the scribe helps out the DI's by keeping track of things in the platoon and assisting in paperwork. It's a position usually assigned to a recruit that shows maturity and responsibility. So he's made a bit of a good impression at this point.
He's had an initial problem that the Corps seems to be pretty slow about getting him his prescription glasses (BCGs) but his spirits are high. Since he's in on a waiver for his eyesight, this has proven a bit difficult for him. He apparently has tried to fall in with the wrong platoon more than once.
Get this too..... The kid apparently loves to march. He'll get his fill of it.
I'm going to start firing encouragement letters off to him this week, so if anyone wants to "say hi" let me know and I'll pass along your good wishes.
If you'd care to drop him a line, PM me and I'll pass along his address too. One note on this though, I'm going to make you give your word that you won't send him anything except letters. Balog's a good kid, and I don't want to hear that he's having a rough time because somebody meant well and sent him cookies.
