Ok, currently I live in CT, a state which still has its own AWB. I want to buy an AR upper, but must comply with the law. I looked at the Bushmaster, and found something interesting: on No-ban section they have a model with Izzy flash suppressor, and on Post-ban section a model with Izzy brake (and BATF approved). I really cannot tell the difference between the Izzy flash suppressor and Izzy brake! Could someone point them out for me? The Izzy brake on the Post-ban model is way far cooler than the original Mini-Y comp muzzle brake or AK74 brake. Are they legal in my state?

I also found that Rock River Arms has AR modles with Mock suppressor, and they also stated these are AWB Compliant, does this mean that BATF consider it as a muzzle brake and I could buy a RRA with this Mock suppressor in CT too?

Sorry to bother you guys (other than from CA, CT, MA, NY, NJ, ???) with the "AWB" word again, I wish one day people from all states NEVER ever need to mention this freak word any more!

If you were to look directly at the muzzle, you would see that the MB has an opening that is the same diameter as the bore. The FS, OTOH, opens up 2-3x larger. This large opening is what causes the gases to mix with air and dissapate quickly.

The RRA mock suppressor wraps around the barrel and does absolutely nothing to hide the flash - so it doesn't qualify as either a muzzle brake or flash suppressor.

Hi Bartholomew Roberts, now I really get a little more confused. If the mock suppressor is neither a muzzle brake nor a flash hider, is it post-ban legal (AWB compilant)? I still have to buy a post-ban AR in CT. Could someone with a RRA post some pics about the mock suppressor?

Rock Jock, thanks for clarifying the differences between the MZ and FH. So the Bushmaster Izzy MZ and Izzy FH are different in openings (inner diameter), right?

Shoot and Hunt,

I don't know where your located within this land of yuppies and wannabees but here's my 2 cents.

There are several compensators/brakes available that very cosely resemble the std AR flash hider. The 2 that I have are solid on the bottom with a row of slots from 7 o'clock to 4 o'clock. The closed bottom is what allows it to be attached as a brake.

The best gun shop in CT to find out and see all the completely legal stuff is Joseph's Gun Shop on S. Main St. in New Britian. Jody and John build and customize AR's constantly. They probably sell more custom AR's in a month than most shops sell std. configurations in a year. (All are CT Legal) Their back wall always has about a dozen AR's set up with all types of options. If you want simple changes made they'll do it while your paperwork is being handled. They are wonderful guys to deal with and all their work is first rate. If you see something you like but don't have the money they may build you a parts gun along the same lines. They've built a couple of parts guns for me that function perfectly and shoot great for about 1/3 less than a new AR of the same configuration.

Hope this helps. Let me know how you make out.
Take Care

The RRA mock suppressor was made specifically to comply with the federal ban. I don't know the specifics of the CT ban; but the RRA mock suppressor was approved by the ATF (which it should have been as it was purely cosmetic).

I'd have to say the muzzle brakes are a lot more useful as well as being postban compliant. I've always kind of looked askance at them because the recoil of a .223 isn't that dramatic to begin with and they make the gun louder for others shooting alongside you; but I have to admit that it is pretty fun to shoot a rifle with a 9x scope on it and not have the crosshairs move at all when you pull the trigger.

Hi Bartholomew Roberts,

thanks for the pic! It is really a very nice rifle! Is the stock retractable now? ;)

I might be a little greedy, but the pic is a little too small and I cannot see the mock suppressor clearly, could we get a close-up pic of it?:) Thanks!
