I picked up a rifle i have been wanting for, for about 15 years. Not neccessarily the caliber, but as I like to do things a little differently, I think I will like it. Winchester Mdl 70 Coyote in a .243 WSSM with a Simmons Aetec Rifle Scope 3.8-12x 44mm plus 120 rds of Win Supreme BST ammo, and 100 rds of spent BST. I think I got a fair deal, $700. Has had 100 rds shot thru it. I have read quite alot about all the cons about this caliber, but don't think it will be an issue. I read alto about ammo availability, but that does not seem to be the case, I stopped at the local Cabelas, and picked up 4 boxs, and left the 8 others there, but jik, i will start stocking up ;)

Not a fan of the scope, but tomorrow will take it to the range and check it out. Most likely I will buy a Leupold 4.5 - 20 for it. But for now, looks to be fun!!:D

Super Shorty...

Idaho Slim--Good that you got the rifle you were looking for. I too have heard good/bad things about the Super Shorts. Don't have one myself, probably won't get one, simply because I don't seem to need a rifle with that general size cartridge.

But--We here @ THR would sure like a range report, with pictures. We all likes pix!! Of the rifle, AND of the target(s).

Im a fan of the Aetech scope.
Matter a fact/ if its made in the Philippines & you want to sell it. Let me know. I will buy it.

I've done loads of research on the .243 WSSM and found most if not all of the negatives somewhat exaggerated. I may soon be forced to buy a D Tech AR in this excellent caliber. I'm jealous! enjoy it.

Aggravating Day

Aggravating due to as soon as I got to the range, the wind picked up and was gusting the whole time, 10 - 15 mph w/ gusts. Plus crappy targets & my shooting was off this morning, I usually shoot my "tack driver" .Win .270 at 1/2' to sub 1/2" 100 yd groups, and the best I could do with the .270 was 3/4' - 1.5" very poor for me.:banghead: Might have to do with crappy weather and maybe too much bourbon the night before

But, onto the wssm ........ I LOVE It, best I could do after the first unexpected touch off was bullets cutting each other with 2 different groups, but the other groups from 3/4 to 1 inch @ 100. I expect to have sub 1/2 inch groups @ 100 yd.s, once I shoot it more. BOY! The previous owner was correct, that with the trigger pull of about 2 lbs., you better be ready when you squeeze, it's like driving a 6 second funny car, when you touch er, SHE RESPONDS, wow! At the end of the day, I shot at 300yds., again I know I was off my game, but they were dead on and maybe 3 inchs right. I was sighting for a 300yd zero with 1.8 inchs @ 100 yds.

Shooting 55 gr, WInchester Supreme Ballistic Silver Tips. My chronograph showed exactly what Winchester advertises, 4065 fps.

i used to have a winchester model 70 super shadow in the .243 WSSM , very flat shooting and accurate rifle, reason i got rid of it cuz had to find the bullets and the bolt kept getting stuck after firing it.

i heard hte Browning bolt gun in .243 WSSM is alot better then the winchester was.

thats perfect for long range deer hunting.

husker, I thought this scope was quite nice, easy to adjust, adjustable objective lens and is like new. It is made in the Philipines, mdl # 800866. Yes, I think I will sell it, here is a picture. When the illuminated knob is on, the cross hairs go to glow red, but what are the small green images at the bottom? I sent you a pm with contact info.

The one Aetech I have on my Mohawk 600 gathers light very well. It dose not have the illuminated cross hairs. I think its a lil older scope than the one you have. But I had no problems out hunting Coyotes at night. clear skies, fresh snow & full moon. GAME ON!

Ready to Rock

Finally got my new scope mounted, I picked up a new Leupold VXIII 6.5 - 20 40mm, w/Adj Obj & the Varmit reticle. Also added a bipod and sling ................... off to the range now. :D

that velocity got me to thinking about something for you to consider. I have a 257 Weatherby mag, and its elevated velocity means that I need to load tough bullets if shots are close. With those 55 grainers sizzling along that fast you are probly good on coyotes and such but I would definitely pick a bonded or solid (TTSX) bullet for deer.

I like the wssm rounds, and have reloaded the 223 wssm. They possess a bit heavier brass than standard rounds but are easy to load, regardless.
You can save a bunch of money by reloading, and can tailor loads to that rifle.
I encourage you to consider a basic reloading package and to start enjoying that facet of the shooting sports.
