I just visited my buddy that has the local gun shop in town and purchased a Winchester Super Sport (blued) with a Simmons Whitetail 3X9 scope in .243 WSSM. He said the guy was short on cash and needed to sell it. The tag my friend had on the rifle was $365 and I think I can twist his arm a bit and get a few more buck off. The rifle is in like new condition. It could not have been fired very much at all.

I'm thinking that loaded with a bullet in the 70 to 80 grain range it would be a dandy coyote rifle that I could carry in my pickup. I think the price is right and the relaoding manual claims you get up to 3500 fps with a 70 grain boattail. I've got no personal experince with any of the WSSM rounds though, but everything I've read has pretty much been positive. I do hear that they are kind of a pain to reload for though.

Who has experince with the round and how do you like it? I'm comfortable with the price as a new in the box without a scope goes for about $560. It feels really good as far as lenght of pull goes and rise of the comb. It should perfrom well if I can find an accurate load. Any thoughts?

Hey, if it's what you want, go for it. Personally I'd rather get a rifle in 6mm Rem (Oh yes, I will get a Ruger #1B in 6mm - some day it will be mine, all mine), as you get the same performance but it doesn't burn the barrel as much. Yeah, it's a longer action than the WSSM, but I've personally never seen the point in going to super short length cartridges. Few rifles, and fewer people can take advantage of the theoretical accuracy improvements.

Well accuracy is one think, the shorter bolt throw and slightly ligher weight is another. I live in coyote country and want a truck gun for targets of oppertunity. A .223 or a 22-250 would work okay but I've always liked a little heavier bullet when not pelt hunting. And speed is often important on surprised coyotes.

In that case, again, if it's what you want, go for it. Since you said it fits you well, as long as you can afford the expense then just do it. Hey, any excuse to buy another gun is a good one.

My only caution would be to make sure you can either get factory ammo, or brass for reloading without spending a fortune. What with the internet that shouldn't be too hard but I'd imagine that .243WSSM might be a bit more difficult to locate locally than .243Win or 6mm Rem.

Sounds like a plan! You should be able to get screaming velocities - 4000+ out of 50-55 grainers.
