Came up with a neat little lapping tool for scope rings. My son came across a small length of heavy 1" SS pipe, have no idea what it was used for, but it was nearly exactly the same diameter of a 1" scope tube. And it was precision flat, looked like it had been put on a lathe, so it must have been for some type of precision application I'm assuming.

I tried it out on a set of Burris Zee rings that were sitting in my inventory, and it worked like a champ. I used a dab of gun oil and some lapping compound, took no time at all to get those rings nice and true.

Prior to my new lapping tool find, I would use oil and compound with a case hardened steel rod, but it isn't 1", so the task was always long and cumbersome to get it right. When I mount a scope, I like to feel the screws come to a positive abrupt stop when tightening them down, thus indicating the rings are making even and positive contact with the tube. And forget about using inserts, I don't like anything between my tube and the rings, I insist on ring to tube contact being a precision fit. I've never had to deal with scope shifting when properly torqued down to the specified inch pounds.

"One mans trash, is another mans treasure, at Bensons Flea Market" That was a little jingle that stuck with me over the years. It was for a commercial for a flea market in Sioux Falls, S.D..
