Got an AK today

Today, I bought the SAR-1 Romanian AK that I have been posting about for the past week or so.

It was pouring the rain, but I was still deterined to try it out when I got home -- so finally, it stopped raining.......I loaded up shooting stuff, and went to shoot it.

It is surprisingly accurate, and the recoil is moderate, but I didn't expect quite as much as it dishes out -- oh well, no problem.....the metal cover on the buttstock is probably to blame -- but I see no reason to replace it (buttstock).

Does anyone know where I can get some cheap 7.62X39 ammo? I paid about $4 per box of 20 today...and bought three boxes.

Congratulations!

The only thing about cheap ammo is to check out the various discount houses on the web.
Buy in bulk. You'll get a much better price if you save up and spend $200 at a whack than if you buy a couples boxes now and then.

Also... would you do some serious target work at fixed range (say 100 and 200 yards) and report back how well the rifle shot?
I'm interested in an SKS type, but I can't use a rifle that doesn't have sight adjustments finer than "East" and "West".

You can find 7.62x39 ammo, on the net, usely $97 to $107 del.
Gun shows usely $79 per case.
I also own a romanian ak, it has worked great since day one.
I currently have k-var synthedic stock set, that also has the forend pistol grip.

I got a case of Wolf from Cabelas.com earlier this year/late last year for ~$80 including shipping. Very easy to order from them.

Good choice on the rifle, btw.

Tad, the 7.62 X 39 has more recoil than either the:

-SAR-2 in 5.45 X 39 (the current-issue Russian round)

-SAR-3 in 5.56 X 45, or .223, the current-issue US round for the M-4/M-16.

So your next AK will not recoil as much as your current one.

Just buy a 1000 rnd case at a time, much more economical that way.

Not sure what most other ammo dealers require in the way of signing froms and scanning/faxing copies of your license, but ammoman.com will ship adult signature required without all the other hassle that several others I've contacted impose on customers (not a law to have that info).

Not quite the best price, but ammoman is top notch service wise, tracking shipment info is sent to you the second it ships, etc. I've bought several cases of 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 from them. I've been hosed around by a couple others, not telling me they were out of stock for two weeks from J&G Sales in particular, that pissed me off...

I've shot some of it and it is indistinguishable from Wolf or any of the other russian milsurp-type ammo.

One of the rubber recoil pads available from places like Cheaper than Dirt might help a little. They are very hard rubber, but some give is better than no give.

FWIW, I too have found the AK to be "more" than I expected, and "more" than an SKS or Ruger Mini-30, although for the latter, not by much.

I can't explain the AK's recoil, because it's not painful, or heavy, or hard, or anything like that, it's just jarring.

It's almost like getting punched in the jaw in a fight. You don't feel the pain or even the impact of the punch... just the jarring sensation accompanied with the motion from the impact.

You might want to try a buffer from Black Jack or one of the other vendors. I use them in all my AKs and they really smooth things out. Gets rid of that metal to metal crash when the bolt carrier hits the rear trunion.

I think my ak, is the first semi auto rifle that I'd ever owned, that I didnt have any problem with, that including mags.
I have a gun safe full of firearms, but my ak always goes to the range with me, and the money I saved on ammo and mags etc, I was able to afford to dress my ak to my comfort.

If you look around, you can generally find AK ammo for around $80 for 1K. Try Cheaper Than Dirt and the Sportsman's Guide.
The thing I have noticed about AK's is that they jump. They don't really kick a whole lot, but they are lively.
Also, watch out for the barrel when you shoot it fast, because they do get hot.
I read somewhere that the Russians designed them that way so their troops wouldn't waste ammo.

Congrats on your new SAR-1! I've owned one since November and it is one of the funnest guns I've ever owned. I've only put around 500 rounds through mine so far, but they have been 500 totally trouble-free, no-malfunction rounds!
