I added another rifle to my ever growing milsurp collection today! For $125 there's no way I could pass it up!

It's an Arisaka Type 99 Izawa Jyuko 4th series. The mum is still pretty much intact and overall it's in pretty good shape with a real nice shiny bore. The number on the bolt doesn't match the receiver but from what I understand that's not uncommon, the number on the front barrel band is correct however.

Hmm... it almost looks like it's attached to something that is in the tube for the cleaning rod. Did the rifle come with the cleaning rod? and/or can they be removed by depressing the button on the left of the picture and pulling foreward?

I looked at an Arisaka last week that had the fold down "airplane sights" but the stock was cracked so I passed it up. I never even got into haggling mode since but it was a nice rifle.

Yeah, mono-pod was much further down the stock. Weird, I've never seen that on a Arisaka before. You got it for a steal though. Great score. I love those rifles.

good find. very nice specimen for $125

I got my t99 back in december, have only hd it out twice, first time it refused to fire, light strikes, the inside of the bolt is all gummed up and I succeeded in cleaning it enough to make it go off most of the time but it still has a light strike every now and then. I paid about $400 for mine but it's also a mum intact, all parts matching w/bayonet and has the flip down anti aircraft sights and monopod intact. it's a shame so many soldiers tore those off, finding a complete unadulterated t99 is getting to be rare... even mine is missing the dust cover.

bit of warning... 7.7 ammo is very hard to find in stock anywhere... believe it or not, cabelas normally has a lot of those goofball cartridges, that's where I ended up getting my ammo from. if you reload... the hornady book and I think sierra book has load data for 7.7.

be sure to post a range review.

Nice. I paid $150 for my sported one about a month ago now. They're a really nice rifle. I've only got one box of ammo at the moment - thanks for the Cabelas tip.

That is a nice rifle. The mum looks good. That looks like a soldier gave it the minimum of defacing prior to some sort of surrender or other and did it without any metalworking tools at his disposal. Probably drove the point of a bayonet into it with a rock or something. The very carefully removed mums were, IIRC, done after the war during the American occupation at McArthur's order to preserve face of the Emperor...which was seen as necessary to cooperation of the people...and which worked flawlessly. The complete un-defaced mums are going to be battlefield trophies, collected and brought home prior to the end of the war, and whose original owner was rendered unable to deface anything by a Soldier, Airman, Sailor, or Marine.

That is a nice rifle, and I'm intrigued by the brackets mounted on the front. I'm no Arisaka expert by a long shot, but I've seen a few and viewed a bunch of photos, and I have never seen an Arisaka rifle with those brackets. It would be nice if someone who has the knowledge, would be able to tell us about their use. I initially thought they had something to do with a grenade launcher, but I found pics of a launcher installed and no brackets with that.
I hope you enjoy your find.

I figured it out.

Whoever had this rifle before me, put it back together wrong. The two prongs are actually connected to a separate piece and go underneath the front barrel band. Easy fix and now it makes sense.

That is an amazing find to get one with the intact "Imperial flower."
Well it's not "intact"...it's been defaced rather half heartedly. It has by no means been removed however. I know a gunshop here recently that has 3 or 4 with the mums completely untouched for sale. In many cases, the mum has been removed both carefully and thoroughly...and is gone completely.

It doesn't look like it was intentionally tried to be removed. I am not an Arisaka expert by any definition but to my vastly untrained eye it looks more like normal wear and tear rather than removal.

it doesn't fit the usual criteria, normally ground all the way off but it does look like someone took a hammer and chizel to it and gave up halfway through...

That`s what I thought, now that looks better, I was going to say something but looks like you got it taken care of..............

Nice rifle nwilliams, I just bought one too on gunbroker for $131, it is at my FFL dealer now with a pps 43 waiting to be picked up, just waiting on my STG 44-22 to come in then I will pick up all three at the same time, wont have to pay as much for the background check if I do all three at the same time :) are going to get a cleaning rod for her?

You are going to have so much fun with the STG 44-22 I love mine! I just wish I had more mags for it. I bought mine a couple months back and held off on getting any extra mags at the time and now the only mags I can find online seem to be pretty pricey. Since I can't own a real STG-44 the 44-22 is a good addition to the milsurp collection just because it looks and feels so authentic even though it isn't.

I believe this is what happened. Somebody was ordered to remove the mum, had no tools, gave 'er a couple of whacks with a bayonet and a rock...and this this particular rifle has a pretty darn nice mum...perfect or not. I've seen both...carefully removed ones and pristine ones.
