So I just got a surprise bonus (sweet!). :what: :D After all is said and done, I'll have about $500 to buy a new toy. I need suggestions!!!! Help! :banghead:

First, what I have now (not much):

-Sig 229R .40
-HOWA 1500 Varminter Supreme .223
-Remington 870 tactical .12

I've been looking at:

-1911's
-Garand (both of these pretty much out of the price range)
-Browning Buckmark Plus Rosewood UDX
-Ruger MarkIII Hunter
-Ruger 10/22

I am definitely open to other suggestions, please make some....!!

If I had $500 to play with, first thing I'd do would be to go out and get myself a Ruger GP-100. I handled one of those at a gun show, and fell in love. They aren't dainty little things, they got some meat on their bones.

But then again, a Garand would be pretty sweet too. The CMP might have some in your price range.

I own a Ruger 10/22 and wouldn't give it up for anything. I got a good deal on mine, $213 for the carbine version and a decen Bushnell scope. If you go that route, you can buy the gun for around $200 and turn it into an EBR if you're so inclined. Or turn it into a tack-driving target rifle. Either way, you'll have plenty of cash to do whatever you like with it if you buy a 10/22.

Just asking since it's somewhat on topic: how do you like the 229R? Is it a CCW? Got any pictures you'd like to share? :D

I LOVE the 229R. No it is not CCW, look what state I'm from (and I'm not law enforcement). Near impossible to get CCW otherwise.

It was my first gun. I absolutely love it. I've shot thousands of rounds through it and maybe had two stovepipes, probably caused more by technique than the gun itself.

Nice. :) When I'm old enough for my CHL, I'm considering the 229R, so I figured I should ask while it's relevant.

To answer your question: I've heard beautiful things about the Ruger 10/22 (duh), as well as about the Springfield Armory 1911's. I think they have a contract with the FBI for their tactical response team's sidearms.

Well, if you shop around, and don't mind "pre-loved" guns, you could probably get both of the Ruger .22's on your list, and still have a little left over toward ammo and accessories.

A big +1
This would round out your collection very nicely and they are so much fun to shoot, because you can shoot as much as you want without breaking the bank.

I'd go for a .22 pistol, except I don't like the grips on the .22/45, I would spend the extra money and get one with the nicer grips.

Everybody needs to own several .22s. It's the only caliber that most people are able to shoot a lot without going broke.
I vote for the two Rugers. They are mainstays. I would guess that most gunowners own those two.
BUT, you can't go wrong with the Buckmark either.

I would take the $500 and sit on it- save up until Christmas and buy a Kimber.

I would take the $500 and sit on it - save up until Thanksgiving and buy a SA Mil-Spec in Stainless. Or, get a nice used S&W revolver (629, 686, whatever) and used .22 pistol.

I have to say, if you can wait and swing it, get the Garand. If you're a WWII buff or had a family member serve during the war, opening that box from CMP is like opening the Ark of the Covenant (less the scary spirits that melt skin from Raiders of the Lost Ark). It was practically a religious experience for me. It is my most treasured gun.
