I have a cousin who hit upon some really hard times last year and had to sell all his guns. He now has a steady job again - not what he was making, but enough for his family to make ends meet. He has saved up about $2,000 to buy guns for basic needs, but really doesn't know that much about what's available and what it should cost so he asked me to give him some suggestions. I was thinking of some good used guns, but he wants new stuff.

Based on what I know he likes to do and needs to do . . .
1. Pistol or revolver in an adequate SD caliber for home defense and range shooting. (Not carry)
2. Shotgun for ducks, geese, pheasant and dove, etc. (Pump preferred)
3. Rifle for hunting whitetailed deer at ranges up to 300 yards. (Bolt preferred w/ scope pkg if possible)
4. .22 semi-auto rifle for plinking and small game hunting.
5. .22 semi-auto pistol for plinking.
6. Compact 9mm semi-auto handgun for carry/truck.

So can you buy 6 new guns for all those roles spending less than $2K? (And not have them be a bunch of junk?) I was skeptical, but it appears possible.

Here's what I've come up with so far ($51 over budget) and would appreciate further suggestions (and links) . . .

1. 4" Ruger GP100 .357 magnum $429
2. Remington 870 Express in 12ga. 3" $305
3. Howa 1500 .270 with Nikko 3-9X42 scope pkg. $435
4. Savage 64 FXP (w/scope pkg) $128
5. Browning Buckmark Camper $255
6. CZ 75 Compact $499

The #2 could be a Mossberg 500. Those are awesome shotguns and usually a bit less than Remington. I got mine for 270. And the #6 could be a Taurus Millennium Pro PT111. I have a PT140 and it's my favorite handgun(I only have 5 though). You can get MilPros for a little over $300. Mine works flawlessly, and I have heard probably 100 positive reviews of MilPros as well.

I have the Savage 64 and it's a super little rifle. Everything a .22 should be, light, comfortable, and accurate, and it has a nice dark finish on the wood too. Great piece for the money.

That is a very good list already and since you know your cousin better it is probably best. I would only question as to why not go ahead and get the larger HD weapon in 9MM to avoid the extra expense of .357 ammo (very expensive these days). 9MM is perfectly adequate for HD.

Might want to look at a Mossberg or Savage rifle for the hunting outfit, i know that savage offers packages not 100% about mossberg packages, everything else looks good to me

I would say stick to 4,
A rifle- depends on his preference
A shotgun- Moss 500 or Rem 870 both will outlast him
A pistol- a good 9mm like the BHP or CZ
& lastly a .22 (Get a Ruger MK II or a Buckmark as both will last a long time)

The idea behind a .357 and also a 9mm . . . the .357 will be both ideal for HD as his wife can shoot it with .38 SPL +P and can also be used for woods carry. It's versatile and .38 SPL can be shot cheaply with option to load up for almost anything else.

Ammo is a concern trying to stick to common+cheap calibers.
