And boy was he a giant! I hunt for meat and usually shoot the first good sized deer that crosses my path to fill up the freezer. Up untill now they have all been doe but this year i didn't draw a doe tag. I was hunting some property my parents own with a friend. He was my treestand and i was trying to nudge some deer his way. I was about 40yrds into the woods going paralell to an uncut corn field. I scared up 4 doe and they ran off along the edge of the corn. I walked about 25yrds more and heard all sorts of snorting and thrashing in the corn. I figure he caught the scent of the doe. a second later he comes busting out of the field, parallel with me, with cornstalks hanging from his rack, looking especally mean. A 4 point came out after him. he tore a$$ off in the direction the doe came from, went about 20yrds before he decided he was going the wrong way, turned around and headed back towards the doe. At this time i didn't realize how big he was. In fact i'd seen him before with that same 4 pointer and aways thought he was a 6 point. I had dropped to one knee and when he came into an open area offering up a broadside shot i took it. He just froze and that's when i realized this deer was HUGE!!! Something in my head, i'm calling it major buck fever, said "he's giant, shoot him again." So i did. He started staggering around and that same buck fever said "keep shooting, he's a frigging GIANT!!" So i shot again, he went down and I put one more in him. The four point chose that moment get some revenge and tried to run me down. I actually had to jump out of his way My friend called me on the radio and asked me if i got anything. I told him yeah and he asked how big? I said i didn't know, i was trying to stop shaking before i checked. After a minute i walked over to the deer, got out my radio and said to my buddy "Holy s***, i just killed a f***ing TEN POINT!!!"
He weighed in at 160 LBS dressed out!!!
From where i shot to where he laid was all of 30yrds.
The gun is a heavy barrelled Mossberg 800BV in .243.
The scope a Tasco 6-24X44 (yeah i know, but it's what i had, so i used it.)
Ammo was my handloads, 100grn Sierra Pro-Hunters over 38.5 grns of IMR 4350.
The first shot was broadside and went through his left shoulder blade, hit his heart, through his right shoulder blade and did not exit.
The second shot was quartering away, entered behind this left shoulder blade, exited in front of right shoulder blade.
The third shot was quarting toward, entered in front of his left shoulder blade exited behind his right shoulder blade.
The fourth shot, he was laying down, entered at his spine above his front legs, exited his chest between his front legs then went through his left front leg.
none of the extra shots were necessary, that buck fever will do crazy things to you. his heart was intact, with one entrerance hole and one exit hole from the first shot. His lungs on the other hand were jello.
sorry for the long post, but hey, it was my first buck!!!
