Ok, I came into a small wind fall so I am now ready to pick up my first 1911. Previously I had some questions regarding inexpensive 1911's but my budget is much better now $800-$1200. So here are some things I would like to have in MY 1911:

-I want it to have a 4" barrel, for what ever reason the full size 1911's simply do not apeal to me.

-I would like to have an external extractor. I have read post after post in which people need to tune their extractors. May be I am spoiled by other guns I have owned but I think that it is reasonable to expect a new gun to reliably eject rounds right out of the box.

-Night sights. I would rather have them come with them then worry about it later.

I am open to everything else. Right now it seems my best bet is the Kimber Tactical ProII. Does any one have any experience's with this gun? I really like the entire package of the Kimber. I Have found these locally at about $850. Is this a good price? Remember that this is cali. Thanks for the help.

I'd recommend the Springfield Armory Champion over the Kimber, any day. It's also available in a lightweight frame version with fully ramped barrel, if you want it to be lighter for carry. See here for more details.

Halfway through your post, I was thinking Kimber Tactical Pro. I got one a couple of weeks ago and really like it. The only thing I don't like is the plastic mag well. I take that back, I don't like the bushingless barrel set-up either. But neither of those two things might bother you. The balance and feel is awesome. I really like the combination of the aluminum frame and commander length. The set of features are really nice at this price point as well. And mine has an incredible trigger pull, very crisp with no creep and about 4 1/2 pounds.

If you can work around the external extractor, consider getting a NRM Colt Commander and adding night sights. I have one of these as well and love it.

Kimber Tactical Pro II if you're looking for a CCW gun.

If just for range/HD maybe pickup a all Stainless Steel Pro Carry. Add nights and buy some quality mags(CMC, Wilson, Metalform) and spend the rest on ammo.

Steve

Let's see, has to have a 4" barrel. Looks like a Kimber or a Springfield.

Has to have an external extractor, just eliminated Springfield.

Night sights, anybody can do these.

For $800 to $1200 you can get better than Kimber, but that seems to be what you want.

Four inch barrel, external extractor, and night sights. Sounds like you just ordered up one of the soon-to-be-available Dan Wesson Commander or CCO.

Designations:

4) PTM-CC, Stainless CCO NEW, external extractor, fixed night sights retail $899
5) PTM-C, Stainless Commander NEW, external extractor, fixed night sights retail $899
6) PTM-CBOB, Stainless Commander NEW, external extractor, fixed night sights, & Ed Brown Bob-Tail retail $899

Note that prices are MSRP. Street prices will likely be less as evidenced by the full size Patriots that list for $899 and sell in the $675-700 range. Unless you order directly from DW then the gun sells at MSRP to avoid hacking off the distributors.

Expected availabilty is late Feb or March. .45's first, then 10mm and whatever other cartridges they have in mind.

From the introductory post by DW President Bob Serva on the 1911 forum:

OK here they are. The new compact Patriots. The pictures are certainly not the best but we never claimed to be photographers. We think that we have everything ironed out but there might be a few minor changes.

- All forged construction
- True 4.25" commander slide and barrel
- SS match grade barrel and bushing
- External extractor
- XS brand night sights standard
- Minimal lasering

The small guy is basically CCO sized, commander slide on an officer frame.

The other gun is a full sized frame but cut for Ed Brown's Bobtail Main Spring housing. We tried this setup on a custom build and liked it so much we called Mr. Brown and asked if we can run these in production.

Will likely ship both guns with Chip McCormick magazines. We are using our own barstock knurled mainspring housing in the CCO. STI carbon trigger and REAL STAINLESS STEEL BEAVERTAILS on both guns. Plus the standard other goodies you have come to expect.

I will try to post more later but for now:

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I think that the new Dan Wesson's would be great, but in they are not on the Cali approved list so I can not get them. Right now it looks like I may simply end up with the Kimber. It seems to be the only real choice with all the features I want, plus It is a great looking gun. Thanks for all the help. Keep up any other suggestion you may have.

Guys I appreciate all the great suggestion. But I have decided.

Kimber Tactical Pro II it is!!!!

I ordered it today. I think that this gun simply looks amazing and it has the features I want. If it is a lemon then it will be a lesson learned. But hopefully with some quality Wilson mags I will be good to go. Thanks for all the help. If I like the format then I will have to save hard for the gun I really wish I could afford the Ed Brown Kobra carry. Thanks Juan

I think you'll like it.

As far as mags go, you might watch for someone doing a group buy from Metalform. You can get the same mags that Springfield uses for their $2395 FBI pistol for ~$12.50 apiece. Half the price of the Wilsons and you can never have too many.

congrats on your decision ddj8052 with the Kimber. The Tactical Pro series is defintely sweet. I had 2 Series I Kimbers that were both awesome shooters. I was soo taken by the semi-custom 1911's I sold them both to finance a Wilson Combat. Best money I ever spent. ENJOY!

What about the problems with the MIM parts in the Kimbers that are failing? I heard on this forum, from Gunsmiths, that they are replacing those parts with Machined parts. Too bad that a $1000 gun has been cheapened....
