A friend has a gp100 in 38 spcl for sale. I thought Ruger only made the gp100 in 357 magnums. I called Ruger and at first she said they never made it and later she did say they did produce them in 09 for a litle while. I asked her if I can shoot 357s in the 38 and she said yes.

I feel a little uneasy about her answer so the question is... can I shoot a 357 load in that 38 and why the heck did Ruger even made a 38 for a little while there when the 357 handles both calibers?

Yes, they did make the Gp100 in .38 spl and no, you can't shoot .357s in it. Are you sure you talked to someone in Customer Service?

You obviously talked to someone who is a little confused.

Some of the departments that have issued revolvers weren't thrilled to issue .357 MAGNUM revolvers because that's scary, so they issued only .38 Specials. Gun makers build guns that their customers want, so Ruger has made .38 Special GP100 and Service Six revolvers. All it takes is reaming the chambers for the shorter case and marking the guns for the other cartridge.

Was looking at a 3" fixed-sight, blued GP100 just the other day. .38 Special. $425.00. They are out there.

Ruger has made runs of GP100s in .38 Special over the years. Usually for some police agency or security company that wanted their officers to be armed with .38s and did not want to take a chance that some officer might load an unauthorized, evil .357 load.

No you can not shoot .357 in a .38. My guess is that .357 won't even chamber. If .357 actually chambers, I would send the gun to Ruger and have them either fix it, or confirm, in writing, that it is safe to shoot .357 in the revolver. My guess is they won't, and will replace the cylinder with a proper .38 Special cylinder. and correct anything else that is out of spec.

I'll pass on the 38 and look for gp100 in 357 - blued... It's what I always wanted anyway... The 400 sounded like a good price but I think I can find what I want for a few more $$$

If you go with the 357, you'll be able to shoot 38's if you want so why not get two guns with one chunk of cash, instead of just one gun? Seems perfectly logical to me...

Well if you did get the .38 GP100 you could handload way up to .357 magnums or use Buffalo Bore 158gr LSWHP .38s which from a 4 incher should get almost 1200 fps (and that's awful close to magnums!)

I would not mind the .38 GP if it was a 3 inch barrel fixed sighted one but well I have enough rugers to last me till Ione day I start pushing up daisises!
