Once upon a time, I had a GB Hunter's Axe and a Wildlife Hatchet. I somehow decided I didn't need both and I let a friend talk me out of the hatchet for the $65 I paid for it new. I always regretted selling it and thought to get another, but the price has gone up and up again, they changed the handle shape to one I like a little less, and I just never did get another. Last weekend, he stopped by with the wildlife hatchet, LIGHTLY RUSTED, and I gave him hell about his terrible neglect of a fine hand-forged tool. He just shrugged, said he never really used it anyway and asked me if I wanted to buy it back. same $65 and he threw in 1/2 of his 6 pack.
I cleaned it up and stropped the edge back to shaving sharp.
good as new and home again. it has resumed its rightful place in my hunting pack. I'll probably switch off from time to time with the hunter's axe but the wildlife is one heck of a nice hatchet. Looking at the prices ($100!) and availability on these makes it still a bargain. I'm going to have to sit down some night and make a heavy leather belt sheath for it too.

I've been looking real close at those too lately---the price has been scaring me off---but will probably bite the bullet and get one before the end of the year.

I've got a GB Wildlife Hatchet, heck of a nice piece. And while all my other camping/outdoors gear is stored in the garage, the GB resides in my gun safe till it's time to work.

I think I need one of this GB Wildlife Hatchet

Another GB enthusiast. Do they still mail out the brochure on use of the axe? If so, ask them for one. It is a worth while read if you've always wondered what all the different models are for.

I went out to place 2 deer stands yesterday and took the hunter's axe. it allows a 2-hand grip for some heavier chopping and I knew there was flood damage in one of the creek bottoms . I touched up the edge when I got home with 600 grit oxide paper over a piece of leather and then stropped with the leather. gotta love a shaving sharp edge.
I hung the hunter and replaced it with the hatchet for the rest of the season. I know you' not supposed to hammer with the poll but I do occaisionally drive tent stakes for a ground blind.
archery deer season opens Oct 01.

hatchet

I know that the subject is the GB hatchets, but will anyone entertain the discussion of another?

The Knives of AK -hatchet. I suppose it is not in the GB class, but since the posters here seem hatchet / axe experienced, this is the place to ask about the one that caught my eye.

Any experience with one of these?

I/A Gransfors is going to ship this GB Wildlife Hatchet to me this week!
Thanks to you all for the talks that motivate me into purchasing it :D

If you like the Gransfor Bruks Wildlife Hatchet but not the price, give the Wetterlings Wildlife Hatchet a try at half the price without much reduction in quality (if any).

I have one of the GB hatchets too, a fine tool. I liked the Wetterlings as well and its usually cheaper by a bit. I would have gotten one but they were out of stock so GB it was and I don't regret it.
