Grease!

I am in the middle of my first AR build. The "manual" calls for using molybdenum disulfide grease, of the kind you get for wheel bearings. You can get a small can from DPMS for IIRC $8. Or you can do what I did and go to the local AutoZone and pay $2 for a 1lb can.
The advantage of this grease is that it will stand up to heat. This got me thinking about gun grease in general. What should one watch out for? Apart from the atrocious smell why shouldnt we use MD grease for all gun applications?

Grease in an AR?

I once read somewhere that white moly grease was the way to go, with respect to the bolt and carrier.

Ah.....no.

Once it heated up after a shot or two, it'd start short stroking like you wouldn't believe. A mere cleaning wasn't enough to rectify the situation. Had to use brake cleaner to return the thing to "just metal" before it would work reliably again.


I stick with hoppe's oil or militec1.

Having "played around" with gun lubricants for almost 50 years, I've come to the conclusion that WHAT you use isn't really important.
It's that you DO use something.

Truth is, most any good quality, water-resistant, heat-resistant grease is about as good as any other.

I've found that greases like Lubriplate, Plasti-lube, Wal-Mart High-Tec Moly-Lithium and about any other automotive or marine-use grease will work as well as any high-tec grease sold a a "Miracle gun lube".

Everyone has their favorites. If your's works for you, use it, and concern yourself with more important things.

I believe The Rabbi is talking about greasing the bbl threads, not any actual moving parts.
