Looking for my first milsurp rifle, decided that fueling a K31 was a bit too expensive. Heading to college in the fall and I want to get a historic workhorse at a decent price. I saw this HOPE AND CHANGE SURVIVAL PACKAGE online at RGUNS.net and was hoping for some input.

$140+$40 flat rate shipping

* Mosin-Nagant M91/30 rifle, Excellent Condition
* Cruciform spike bayonet
* "Dog collar" sling
* 30 round double ammo pouch
* Sealed 440 round tin of 7.62x54mmR ammunition

Hi Lone,
R-guns has a heck of a billboard on their receivers, I got an M44 at my LGS that came through them. Do a price check from Aim surplus in OH. I got a laminated stock 91/30 plus all the accessories a couple of years ago. It appeared to be unissued as it was marked 1946.

Lawfully, they can't ship the ammo and firearm in the same package. I am not sure about "same time". Anyhow, I have been very pleased doing business with AIM Surplus so do a price comparison.
Best,
Rob

It's not a terrible deal. It'll cost you about $200 once you factor in transfer fees. You could probably do just as well shopping locally--91/30's seem to go for about $100 in the stores, and the ammo is worth about $80-100.

The 91/30's are easy to find. They don't say what kind of ammo the tin is, but if it's decent stuff the deal is good.

I started to say no, you could do better, but then I saw that a spam can of ammo is included. Average Mosin Nagant M91-30 rifles are available at dozens of places for as little as $70 before the "getting-it-in-your-hands" expenses.

Rifle - $100
Shipping - $25
FFL - $25
Sales tax - $10
-----------------
Total for rifle - $160 (YMMV. That's about what I paid.)

The ammo can be had for about $80 and shipping, so that's a pretty good deal.
The Mosins are good shooters for that kind of money. Expect to spend some quality time with the rifle, removing cosmoline and cleaning it before you try to shoot it.

BTW, that ammo is corrosive. No biggie. Just be sure to swab the barrel out with some soapy water, followed up by some oil after you shoot.

If you're buying online, you can do way better than $100 for a 91/30. I picked up two for $160 delivered the end of last year (I have a C&R, so no transfer fee).

The entire deal the OP is citing is for $180: $140+$40 shipping. If you are buying locally, you can probably find one for $100+tax and skip the whole FFL and shipping fees. You can find the ammo for around $80 at the next local gun show and save the shipping costs.

No. You can't do way better than $100 online for a 91-30, but let's say you find a dealer that actually has one that isn't a piece of junk with a counterbored barrel, mismatched numbers, etc. for $70, (best advertised price I've seen lately), you still can't get the rifle and a spam can of ammo for $140. And that's before you even think about any other expenses.

Shipping (which BTW, the rifle and the ammo will have to be shipped separately) is going to run at least $35. So the $140 deal for rifle and ammo doesn't sound so bad.

It's going to be about $200-220 all said, which is about the typical price for a Mosin with accessories plus a can of ammo. The question was whether it is a great deal or not. All I was trying to get across is that it's not a smoking deal, but nobody's taking advantage of him at that price either.

Mosin 91/30s go for around 79 bucks, 440 rounds of 7.62x54 go for 70-80 bucks total about 150-160. I guess with shipping that's a good deal. I would wait and look local if I could.

From my limited experience it's not a deal you need to jump on right away, but not one that you are going to do a LOT better on. Though if you have some patience and shop gun shows you can at least choose the one you want.
Or save up for a rifle that won't end up costing you 20k in shoulder surgery ; ]

It is about right on price if it is a good rifle. Mosins can range from battlefield scrap with mismatched numbers and headspace problems to re arsenaled rifles that seem like time forgot about them.

Make sure you know what you are getting!

Mosins are good dirty corrosive fun!!!!

If you havent added the ffl fees to the above price then I wouldn't do it.

If so then consider this

J&G sales
79.99 91/30
$22 shipping
$80 for 440rd tin ammo
FFL transfer

Thats about the best deal around unless you buy FTF.

Looks like a great deal to me. Best prices I've seen are

Mosin $70
Ammo $80
Since they have to be shipped separately you're looking at about $20 each.
You'll have to pay the FFL one way or another, so that's a moot point.

So that comes to $190 which is more than your $180. I don't know how you'd do better unless buying in bulk.

It's a decent deal. If I were in the market for anothe Mosin Nagant, I would seriously consider it. You could do a lot worse. I'd rate this deal as about average market price.

91/30's in my area go for around $100, spam can of ammo, $80. If you can find what you're looking for in a LGS, you'll save yourself some cash, as you won't need to pay shipping or FFL fees. At least, I've never bought a gun over the counter that didn't have the FFL fee in the sale price.
