Green Dot Powder

Has anyone used green dot powder for their pistol loads? In particular, I am interested in how it works for 9mm, .40, and .45 with FMJ or plated bullets. I am just looking to make practice ammo. Thanks.

Its a good powder that's often overlooked. Works great for target loads in the .45 and .38 spl. Never used jacketed bullets wit GD but it should as good as any powder. Its relatively fast being somewhere between Unique and W231.

I don't believe my book shows Green dot loading data, anyone like to share some tested data for 38/.357 and .40/10mm? Would be appreciated. Thanks Mac

I've only used it with jacketed .45 acp loads, and it works very well. It proved to be very accurate with Winchester 230 gr. JHP bullets.

I use green dot in my 44 magnum for my 210gr loads and I LOVE it. The groups are tight and the recoil is considerably lower than with 2400. I opt for 2400 on my full house 240gr rounds, but I like green dot for the lighter stuff.

Being a big, flaky powder can throw your consistency off with some powder throws. Be sure to measure your throws for consistency when you start to make sure you're within your bounds.

Attached is some Alliant load data someone here was gracious enough to pass along to me in a previous thread. It lists loads for 10mm, 38, and 45. You might find it useful.

9mm Green Dot loads

I used 4.7 grains with a 115 grain Montana Gold fmj bullet. Shot very well. I have also loaded 4.5 - 5.0 gn Green Dot behind 125gn Lead TC bullets. 5.0gn seemed pretty warm but there was no pressure signs. I liked the 4.5 loading better. Bothe of these loads were shot out of a P95 Ruger and had no problems cycling down to 4.0 grains (lowest I tried). As usual this is just what I have tried, always load light and work your loads up.

kfox, some have commented that Green Dot burns dirtier than other powders, like W231. Can you comment on how clean/dirty GD burns? If you can, compared to other powders you may have used.

I have only tried Green Dot in one loading, but it seemed pretty clean to me.

I've personally used GD for 45 Colt and 9mm, know folks that use it for 38 spcl, 45 acp, 380, etc. All with lead bullets, as the muzzle velocities are pretty much in the plinking ranges. Little difficult to meter, but it works well enough.

I like it because I can do all my pistol loads AND shotgun loads with the same powder. Cuts down on the inventory I have to keep.

I'm buying an 8 lb. keg for my shotgun loading, nice to know I can use it in my 9mm loads as well.

Buying in 8 lb. kegs is the ticket. 110 bucks for 8 lbs, vs. LGS @ 31 bucks a lb.
