Hi, Riss it depends on what type of gun metal. I use Green dye in the Parkerizering , and sometimes blue the metal before. seems like every guns metal is diffent.here is another 1903 next to a jap 99, its hard to tell from the Picturer but the Jap 99 is a very dark Black. and the 1903 is a dark green.
I have had luck using varied temperatures to get different colors. Hot usually gets a green or gray/green and if I start out with a cold bath and cold metal and bring the temp up slowly I can usually get deep black.
Hi, I never tryed that , I have 2 tanks and heat the Parkerizing Solution to 145F and stir the Solution up , as I am sandblasting the parts.Getting the black never been a Problem, if the Parts do not come out right the first few trys then I use a Blueing Solution. I going to get a 3rd tank for hot blueing shortly and try that and duracoating as well.
I usually start with a dead cold bath and very slowly bring the temp up. When I see it starting to turn color or bubble I try to level off the heat and keep it there, not sure what temp that is, but keep it constant until the little bubbles stop. When the parts are good and black and no more bubbles I bring the temp up until I get near boiling or the little flakes start appearing. Then the bath is finished reacting with the metal.
