Just seen on the news. By the dumpster of a convenience store in Duncanville, south of Dallas, Texas, was found a bag with munitions. Inside were 3 apparently live vintage pineapple grenades with apparent firing mechanisms in place, plus one, single use, shoulder fired rocket launcher with rocket. The rocket was apparently capable of up to one foot of steel penetration, in other words, light-medium armored vehicles.

The bag was hanging from the dumpster and seem by an employee on Monday evening. She saw it again today, Tuesday, and decided to investigate. When she saw the munitions, she called the authorities.

No word yet on who, what, why, how, or for what.

No link, at least not yet. What do you mean that it just isn't enough information? What information do you need? I simply passed on what was reported on this evening's news and you received pretty much all the salient details.

If it makes you feel better, the footage included showing an apparent FBI agent (newscaster identification) inspecting the bag and then taping the spoons downs on the grenades. It was reported that the style of grenade was likely manufactured between WWII and the Korean War.

Here is the only link I can find and it was not by Google, but from the local TV station. Look to the "News Now" section, click on the link, and register yourself to get their version of the story.

Explosives found at Duncanville gas station

07:57 PM CST on Tuesday, November 23, 2004

From Staff Reports

Police evacuated the area around a Duncanville service station Tuesday afternoon after a bag containing what appeared to be explosive devices was found in the parking lot.

Authorities responded just after 4 p.m. to an Exxon station at the intersection of Highway 67 and Danieldale Road after receiving a call about the suspicious item. The Dallas Police bomb squad, FBI and ATF officials were also called to the scene.

Initial reports indicated that the bag appeared to contain several grenades, and possibly a launching apparatus for an anti-tank weapon.

City officials shut down Danieldale and Candlelight roads, and the northbound and southbound service roads of Highway 67 are also being blocked to prevent traffic from traveling west on Danieldale.

Thanx naught. I wanted to post it elsewhere and needed a link. I was just thinking out loud about not enough info.

Didn't mean to offend, if it did. Thanx for the info.

BTW, youse guys got any muslims in TX?

From what I understand about the Texas gang problem is that gangs are making a fortune smuggling drugs, illegal weapons and immigrants over the border and the different gangs are always fighting over the "cargo" that the others have brought in.

"plus one, single use, shoulder fired rocket launcher with rocket."

From the description of the weapons it's probably a LAW but I haven't seen any pictures of it. Maybe that got it to take out a good old '64 Impala. The car of choice for gang members.

I know for a fact that '64 Impalas were built like tanks but they sure as heck aren't that hard to take out. Just a simple bullet to the radiator and it's done.

OH....WAIT...yeah, I can see needing something like a LAW or RPG to take a Texas gang '64 Impala out. They have at least a foot of gold flake paint and not to mention the four feet of blue and tiger stripe velvet interior.

The only problem I can see is the 22" rims. Those low riding impalas look like 4x4 trucks with a foot of clearance under them. If the going gets tough they can hike tail through the desert or over curbs.

But seriously, it's bad enough that innocent people are getting shot and killed in the crossfire of gang wars but now they are going to get blown up as well.

that or a trip to east texas w/ a buddy and a darwin award after saying those magic words... "Hey bubba - watch this!" <heh>

(for the record - my feed store guy calls himself bubba... rofl - its not just a generalization =))(course ... needing a feed store prolly is... rofl)

Pinned..., and I apologize. I was doing good to remember the specifics of the news cast. Before my post, I had done several variations of Google searches to find more data on the web, but with no luck. What you got was pretty much all I had.

Are there any Muslims in Texas? Given that Muslims comprise the single largest religious group in the world, it would be hard for there to not be Muslims in Texas. In fact, a recent news cast had information on one Islamic extremist who worked as a city planner engineer for the City of Dallas. Mayor Laura Miller was notified by letter that he was on the FBI watch list. She never saw the letter and worked with the guy on various projects. She didn't see the letter because apparently she had just been elected and got lots of mail. An aid apparently did read it and turn it over to the cops. The engineer turns out to be working in his spare time as an actor and singer to raise money for Hamass (sp?). He sort of lead a double life. In fact, the City of Dallas was doing such a good job was keeping an eye on him that they didn't even know his license had expired. The slip up on Milller's staff is amazing. When you get a letter from the FBI that is addressed to your boss, then your boss really needs to see it, wouldn't you think? The real concern about the guy is that he had access to all of the Dallas infrastructure because of the job he held with the city. While not top secret, most of it is not common public knowledge. So the scary thing is that he had it and had radical Islamic ties.

With that said, some Muslims may be a threat, but there are a lot of other threats that need to be dealt with as well. There are also Anglos in Texas and there have been some very radical Anglos who have done some very bad things like Timothy McVeigh, Republic of Texas faction, etc. Domestic terrorists are as bad as foreign and Christian as bad as Muslim.

I somehow doubt this was some great terrorist plot and if it was we are not exactly talking about the brightest bulbs in the cell to leave that stuff hanging on a dumbster out in the open.

My guess is either gang related or some Vietnam vet who managed to have a bunch of this stuff finally wised up and decided to get rid of it in hopes that the trash guy would see that they were explosives and call the cops.

Chris

Yeah, I gotta agree.
While it is against federal law to have those pesky DDs, if the previous owner had intended to do someone any harm with them, then they would've kept them.

I think that someone just decided it was time to lose them rather than reisk getting caught with them or having someone else find them.

Ya know, kids may not have sense enough to think that they might have found real, live grenades, but they have seen enough John Wayne movies to know how to pull the pin and throw them!

Then again, that wasn't a real safe place to leave them, either, was it? :what:

Someone left their deer hunting stuff hanging there? I've seen Texas deer, you don't need grenades and a LAWS rocket; Heck even a (Insert weapon to deride here)[Glock, 9mm, AR, .25ACP, etc.] could kill one. ;)

" Got the Coors Lite?"

"Yup"

"Ice?"

"Yup"

"Well, that's it, I reckon. But I still think we're forgettin' something..." :p

;)

If the grenades were manufactured between WW2 and the Korean War, it wasn't a Vietnam vet. But it could be that some Korean War vet had them in his basement as souvenirs, and when he died his kids found them and wanted to get rid of them without having to do a lot of explaining.

A LAW single use (M-72) rocket came on line in 63 or there abouts. Pineapples were used up to 61 BUT I did see some in Nam first tour 67. Until 68 or so the checking of personal property shipments from Nam to Conus was sketchy. People were known to stuff stereo speaker cabinets with things like grenades or Grease guns (M-3) ect. ;)

Not a great terrorist plot and not the brightest bulbs in the cell?

Maybe not, but then again a plot doesn't have to be great, just functional. Plus you don't have to be all that bright. Take Tim McVeigh and OKC. The moron was driving around in a car that had some road-worthiness issue (what, something like an expired tag or light out) that caught the attention of cops. Smarter bad guys don't drive vehicles that draw the attention of cops, but they still manage to pull off crimes.

I know for a fact that a LAW will make a early 60's ford falcon unservicable. I grew up in Lawton, OK (think Ft. Sill) and used to spend a lot of time in the training areas and on the impact ranges on the weekends. Yes, it was pretty stupid, but aren't most boys around 14 or so. It was amazing what you could find out there sometimes.

That doesn't speak much for the LAW, I've seen some early 60's Ford Falcons that a headwind would make immobile...
