"Gripping" a revolver

I began handgunning with a revolver a lot of years ago. I was away from it for quite some time, raising a family and so forth, and over the more recent years have begun visiting the range and shooting again. I have moved more to semi-auto's at this point, and recently tried shooting a D/A revolver; it wasn't as "hand-filling" (if that is the right terminology), and seemed almost hard to hold onto-

Any tips on how to fix this? I would like to shoot revolvers again as I like their simplicity of operation (please, no warfare over revolver vs. semi)
but need to be able to be comfortable handling/shooting the gun

The nice thing about revolvers is the lack of a reciprocating slide. This allows you to hold the gun as high on the grip as you can. This gets the bore line lower in the hand, reducing felt recoil.

Shoot more, then fix, maybe. Grip is different, but maybe not deficient. Your hand will find the truth.

It first begs the question, What gun and, more importantly, what grips were you using? Did the grips (not necessarily the gun) look something like the ones in this pic?:

If so, they're notoriously ergonomically bad. Much too thin near the top. Not "hand filling" at all. The Tyler T-grip (link below) fills this area nicely, and many feel they're a big improvement. Not an endorsement for T-grips, per se, but just pointing out that some grips just won't work for some shooters, no matter how the shooter grips the gun.

Alternatively, there are many aftermarket grips available for revolvers that are pretty ergonomic and fill the hand. Once that's established, then there's the issue of actually gripping the gun while shooting.

Yep, gotta know more about the gun and grips you shot. I've got big hands too and can't hold the sort of gun shown in MrBorland's first link worth a hoot.

On the other hand the Hogue or target style grips shown below on my 19 and 28 respectively are much nicer to wrap a big hand around and indeed fit my grip to a "T".

A friend of mine (Marine Expert and former police officer) gave me some pointers regarding my grip on a S&W revolver.

He stated that I was holding it too far down the grip. He asked me to move the web of my hand up to where the backstrap angles to the horizontal (behind the hammer). It felt quite uncomfortable at first, but that is where I grip now. He had me insert the revolver into the web of my open hand.

He was not so concerned regarding S/A revolver grip position.
