I have a first issue PP with the thin factory grips.
I would like something more hand filling but I am concerned that what is generally available is made to fit later versions.
I did pick up a set at a gun show (for cheap) that was supposed to fit but clearly won't.
Anyone have any hints?
I may go for a Tyler T grip if I can't find anything else.
Oh yeah, I really would rather not spend over $50 for grips.

TIA

If KJeff is correct, I might be able to assist. I bought a set of NOS Herretts grips for my 1971 Det. Special. Rather than the short frame grips, I received the long frame ones. Still have 'em in the box and will lt them go for what I have in them, much less than yourt limit. Pics and price available if you are interested.

Maybe yes, maybe no...

Colt started the seires with a model called the "New Police" that had a square butt, but was narrow at the bottom. The first Police Positives retained this narrow butt. But when Colt introduced the .38 Police positive they made the butt slightly wider at the bottom. Then they decided to use the .38 frame on .32 revolver also. So if you have a .38 Police Positive it will have the wider/square butt (not the rounded corners Detective Special one) but if you have a .32 Police Positive the width of the butt depends on when it was made.

heysox, thanks for the offer but from looking at the picture you sent I am pretty sure my grip frame is more narrow.
The gun is a 38 police positive special and was made in 1921.
The tyler T-grip web site lists their adaptor for guns made before 1941 as diffrent than after 1941.
I will probably go with a T-grip.

This is weird, I have a Police Positive Special on layaway that was made in and around 1921:eek: . It was "modified" in to Dick Special size by a smith shortening the barrel to 2 1/2" and nickle plating it. Got it because the price was right, $175. I have a little more to go till I get it out and see how it shoots.

All of the Police Positive SPECIALS were made on a frame with the wider grip. However after 1954 the grip was rounded on the bottom corners as done on the Detective Specials after 1933. You may be able to use 1st. generation Detective Special Stocks that cover the frontstrap if there is enough material so that you can "square out" the wood in the cornersto match a true square butt. Otherwise a Tyler-T adapter is the best answer.

I have on occasion, sawed off the bottom of the butt on some older guns (with no collector's value) and used the stocks that came on the last issue Detective Special which covered the bottom of the butt. A little glass bedding compound anchored them in place. Stocks of this sort are available from a number of sources and are sometimes inexpensive.
