This might not be the right place to post this, but I'll try.
I have a set of old revolver grips. I was told they were ivory or bone. They feel very cold on my face. They are heavy. A red hot pin would not penetrate the surface (it broke). One has a purple stain.
Any ideas?

When you applied the red hot pin, what did the smoke smell like?

Ivory will have a burned hair smell. They could also be antler, with the bark removed.

The pin kept breaking at the point and I never got any real smell. Now I have to figure out what kind of gun they go on.

The cracks look like ivory. Ivory is the dentin part of teeth, usually elephant or walrus. Just like extracted human teeth, they split and crack as they dry out and age.

Look like Ivory to me too.

I recently got handed a bunch of chips and slivers that are supposed to be ivory and have to figure what to do with them. I was looking for Piano key scales to make an inlay or two from among a friends old art junk and found the scrap instead and she gave them to me.

Blast I feel like I should KNOW that pattern on the insides of the grips but it just won't come to the surface of my brain. Square butt.......round lightening hole near base, round hole with mainspring slot at five oclock.... I really should know it ..........

Go up to Revolvers and ask if anyone recognizes those patterns.
