A while back someone here posted a pic of a 1851 Navy variation.

I may well have this name wrong. does it ring a bell with any of you?

If so can you post a pic and brief history of that particular firearm?

Phantom Captain, is that a picture of a non firing replica. I was thinking they looked slightly different.
Great article :)

Thanks for straightening me out on that Captain. I like the round barrelled look to it a lot.

Odd variations like that interest me a lot. Thanks for the two links.

Should you want to try one...

This pistol is a Pietta .44 caliber version of it (the real thing was .36) at Cabela's for $139.99.

A more authentic .36 caliber version of the same gun is here for $180:

Also at Dixie, another variant of the 1851/Dragoon hybrid, this one with a steel frame but without without the rear shield: the Dance and Brothers.

Im283,

Happy to help!

It is interesting for sure. I kinda like the way it looks too. Don't make me go buy another cap and ball revolver, LOL!! Just what I need.

Nice ArmedBear, you just had to go and tempt me even more. Really nice price for that .36 at Dixie too, being brass framed and all. Sooo tempting....

And hmmm, I don't seem to have any brass framed ones in my collection yet.

Armed Bear, you notice anything funny about that picture from Cabelas? LOL

If I get one it will be in .44 . I am keeping them all that caliber, not sure I want to go branching of into .36

I believe from what I have read on the Griswold that they made them only in brass frame, so it would look correct. I don't mind the bastard caliber...

Phantom you need at least one brass frame, and since this was originally in brass, hmmmmmm.....

gears turning, 139 bucks is not a lot.

Mmmm hmmm,

Just so happens I'm gonna be right by Cabelas in Hammond tomorrow. Might have to pop in there and, uh, take a look at the brass framed .44 version. I think I would prefer the .36 like Dixie has or that High Standard version, but man, for $139 I don't think I can go wrong. You know, just to check it out up close...or something. :D

for 139.99 no one can go wrong. That was my first BP hand gun. which i believe has been my best purchase. As if i did not purchase it i would not have go into bp cap and ball shooting. its a fine hand gun and works very well.

I caved in today. Called Cabelas and ordered it. The website even had a notation about 4.95 shipping on orders over $100. That special rate ended on Feb 22 but I asked if I could have it anyway and the girl worked it out :)

I am taking the money I have been saving for a 1873 in .357, guess I will be starting that fund over again. It left me with little more than some seed money there.

I bet I have it Wednesday. cool!

good job Make sure you post pics when you get it. Im doing a project today on mine i have it soaking in vinegar right now. i took it out and polished it up. But was not happy with the way it looked so i have it soaking some more right now.

I posted this link the other day. The seller lives in Kansas and he won't ship this gun, which is too bad because that is a great price. Maybe you can contact him and convince him to ship it.

I just purchased this pistol from that individual this past Friday. Very nice condition, never fired in original box. He did not have the presentation case nor the brass plate with the Georgia State seal but that's the way it goes. Overall, I'm very pleased with it. I think everyone should have at least one pistol with their name on it!

Thanks! Actually, it's my first BP. Really don't have any intention of ever shooting this one. Just had to pick it up for it's namesake. I might have to get a shooter at some time though just to see if I like it. I have too many other hungry toys to feed though and their diet is not getting any cheaper. :(

If anyone has a photo of the original presentation case, I'd be interested in seeing it and get dimensions etc. I have some decent woodworking skills and just might have to build one if nothing else.

this is a colt london

Now you see that letter on the top

Well i re wrote it out. you can copy it save it to word then print it out on some parchament paper. in a few months it will look just like the original.
let me find the link.

I've had this High Standard for a few years. I shoot it every now and then. It has the same issues and problems as Ubertis and Piettas (I think they were made by Uberti). It's a great gun but sometimes they are overpriced on auction sites.

KC, why not shoot it? Kind of like buying a car and not driving it. Even if I could afford and did buy a vintage hot rod with next to no miles on it or even no miles on it I would still take it for a Sunday drive from time to time.

Go and shoot it.

Agreed otherwise you just have another shiney replica. Even more shiney then the original ones and everyone elses.
