I WANT to get a fun rifle in 22LR

My dealer has me on the list for a GSG 5 costing around $500.

OR should I get the HENRY Survival Rifle that comes apart and fits in its own stock, the MSRP is $225.00

This is just for range plinking, maybe 300-500 rounds per month.

Im leaning towards the HENRY. Does anyone have one?, any experience with it?
GUN TESTS magazine reviewed it and loved it.

any other ideas for a plinker 22 rifle?

any constructive input is welcome.

thanks

The AR7 is a neat little package. For canoeing it is the best .22. However for the amount shooting you are talking about there are many better choices IMHO. The Ruger 10/22, any of the Marlin and Reminton auto loaders will be more usable. I have not seen the GSg 5 yet.

As TheDriver said, a little Henry lever action is a lot of fun. Although, if you don't have a semi-auto .22, I'd point you towards a Marlin 60. Get a SPEE-D-LOADER for it and go to town.

Regarding the GSG-5, you might want to snoop around the boards on that one, I've seen more than a few complaints of jamming.

You can say the same for the AR-7.

A lot of them have major problems.

IMHO: Any number of other rifles will be more accurate, much more reliable, and last longer then either of the two guns mentioned.

The few AR7's I've seen run through my store were.....well, let's just say I wouldn't keep one if you gave it to me. To boot, the stock is one of THE weirdest contraptions, and is about 3x as wise as I would like.

The GSG5 seems awesome, can take 20 round mags, looks alot like an MP5, and has all of the "evil" "Assault rifle" charachteristics without being one, so it irritates antis.

Seems pretty clear cut to me.

If you want a takedown .22, I recommend looking at the Marlin Papoose instead of the AR-7. They feel a lot more solid, and hold very naturally. I was thinking about buying an AR-7, but they feel cheap, and slightly awkward.

I like my Charter AR7. I had another one that got stolen. Both function find, shoot about 1" at 25 yards which ain't a target gun, but adequate for small game. With a scope, I can keep 'em into about 1.5" at 50. It is quite the specialized firearm. I have mine for carry in boat or motorcycle stowed away. I've fitted it with a telescoping stock and barrel shroud, so it no longer is stow in the stock, but I have a Marlin Papoose floating case for it. I have a scope mounted on it, too, so it really isn't a stow in the stock compatible gun anyway and has a much better feel to shoot with the current set up.

For general duty, I don't take the AR7. My preferred knock about and plinker is a 10/22 stainless and I have more accurate .22s if I need that. I've only taken the AR7 on bike trips for east Texas squirrels and stick it in the boat occasionally. Very neat little gun for the purpose and serves me well, but I won't recommend it for a general purpose .22.

If you want a QUALITY take down, skip right on past the papoose and look to the little Browning take down, a classic gun in various grades, absolutely beautiful little firearm, but a little expensive as .22s go. I will get one some day, though. :D

I own a GSG-5 and have owned a Charter AR7 and they are completely different animals. The AR7 is meant to be a survival rifle and the ergonomics are not nearly as nice as the GSG-5. For a fun plinking gun I would go with the GSG-5 or a 10/22. If you are looking for a rifle you can stash in your backpack when you go out camping or on a trunk gun the AR7 is fine.

The GSG-5 if you can get one are absolutely a hoot to shoot. I have had mine for almost a month and have 2,500 rounds through it with only 3 minor malfunctions.

10/22

I would go for the ruger 10/22. Customize them anyway you want. Hi-cap mags, stocks, barrels, optics, anything. But it looks like the gsg-5 is pretty customizable. But i would get the 10/22. Let them work the bugs out of the gsg-5.

neither, there is ONE screw up front, just below the bbl, near the back of the handguards, that it alone literally holds everything on to the receiver, forward of that screw, for the gsg. Not good. wait for a keltec su 22, or a plr 22.

now i will say that I have not had a henry ar-7, but I had one of all the others made. Their unreliability, and their terrible rear site setup is legendary.
just know that going in...

if you must have somehting small, and takedown, find a used marlin papoose, and get a hi cap mag for it, 15 or 25 rounder I believe. Reliable, accurate, dependable, will shoot anything, and take down is super easy.

yeah, I have a dedicated Spike Tacticle 22lr, and have not had any problems yet, over 2000 rounds in the first 2 months and NO FTF or nothing. Been running Aguila Ammo and its been eating them up. I am very happy with my 22lr. here is a picture.

I briefly had an AR-7. Honestly...it was horrible.

Wouldn't feed very well and the ergonomics are some of the worst I've felt. Every time you fire it had this hollow THUNK sound.

Hey, it's interesting and unusual...why I got it. But as a regular range gun, forget it.

You'd have more fun with a 10/22 or Henry lever action carbine.
