Guatemalan 5.56 at AIM.

Has anybody used this ammo in the past? AIM is selling it for 64.95 for a 360 round battle pack or 1440 round case for 246.95. How does it compare to Win. Q3131? Picked up some Q3131 at BassPro on sale for 3.60 a box(wish I'd had more money at the time, would have picked up 2k more.)

The general rule is, don't shoot surplus ammo from countries where you can't drink the water. But if this Guatemalan is good, maybe there are exceptions.

I haven't tried it, but I'm curious, too.

According to several posters in the Ammo forum on Arfcom, the Guatemalan 5.56 in battlepacks is very good stuff, comparable to XM-193 or Q3131A. I'm debating whether to order a case of this or the new Wolf Gold M-193.

It just seems a little pricey for surplus 5.56. However, with the shortage of M193-spec ammo I suppose it's close to the market price. I reckon I'll have to pick up a pack of it and try it out.

There was a bunch of 80s era Guatemalan surplus on the market around 2000. It was well liked by AR15 owners as it was M193-spec and hot. Some of the past stuff was pretty tarnished and ugly looking from what I understand though.

Nobody knows if this is the same lot, same stuff or anything else; but I've got an order in for some myself just on the off chance it is as good as the previous batch.

I just got one of the 360 round packs from AIM. I was a little upset that they had cut open the package before shipping. Did they do this to anybody else?


I can't wait to get a chance to shoot it.......

Spot77, I'm pretty sure they are opening all the packs to ensure all the ammo is in good condition. What condition is your's in? Nice and shiney or somewhat tarnished?

I bought a battle pack of the Guatemalan. It was made in the 80's and looks almost like new. I've not had a chance to shoot or chronograph it.

I saw a post on ar15.com that said a number of people got some ammo that had been stained or corroded to the point of being unuseable. The post was written by the owner of AIM saying they would replace any bad ammo and were starting to inspect all or a significant percentage of all battle packs. It is probably good that your case was cut open. I don't have any myself though.

Spot77, they didn't cut open the initial orders and a bunch of people complained about receiving corroded brass. The plastic battlepacks are fairly brittle and apparently some split and there was termite damage inside the packs.

I bought mine during the initial order and did get a fair amount of corrosion on some of the brass; but even the corroded stuff has fired just fine with typical M193 accuracy and good velocity.

Since the initial complaints, AIM has been checking brass to make sure it all looks good before it ships. So the battlepacks are cut; but you don't have to worry about corroded brass.
